View Full Version : Poster - 2D Character - Gamoron
Gamoron 08-16-2002, 07:28 PM I made this because it's getting close to september. I wanted people to do a little thinking about it. I don't know what I plan on doing with it. Maybe post it around the city.
Hope you can read it, the resolution is a little poor.

Hm... don't know about the idea. Scaring people in making them do something? I don't know... and what does it have to do with september 11?
But the style of this pic I dig a lot. It's got power, motion and tension because of the roughness. Personally I think this is exactly what your storyboarding needs. (And I have the idea that it is more fun to do aswell ;) )
Keep it up

Hey jeroentje. Thanks. I'm not really trying to scare anyone with this. I liked the image. I threw in some text to post it. I want people to consider how there governments treat other countries, what they as individuals consume that might affect other people globally. That sort of thing, I think that sort of stuff has a lot to do with sep 11. We affect everyone else.
It was a lot of fun to do the image! I'll try to apply it to my other work. Cheers!

I really like the sketchy style you got there.
It resembles the John Romita Jr. Style, he draws Spiderman comics.
So give us some more of that style :D
About the text, why not shorten it a bit, short and powerfull.

man i dig that style really awesome poster  ....but your text is some way weak...too long, to set up (hope you know what i think of)...for such a powerful emotion the claim has to be more provocative :D ....now it sounds like some ad to get people giving some blood to the red cross...sorry just my first thoughts....what about something like:
...live from death row...
wanna join?
or
this coming vision is reality
no place to hide
or a longer one already used by ratm
it has to start somewhere
it has to start sometime
what better place than here
what better time than now
all hell can't stop us now
these ones are just some quick ideas...feel free to play around with....keep us updated

Thanks for the input guys.
@schmu_20mol, Cheers! you're right, the text was more spontaneous when I first threw it down, then I edited, and edited again. Mistake. I'll see what i can do, thanks for the suggestions.

I really like the art, but think the concept is poor. It's not a good idea to mix cartoonish art with serious subject matter, especially in the PC world we live in now. Drop the text and youv'e got a fine piece.

Thanks frye. But sorry I totally disagree with you. There is no right and wrong in art. Have you read "Understanding Comics"? It's a book on comics, and iconography. In it the author says we tend to empathise more with iconic characters (cartoon characters) because they don't look like anyone we know, their faces are human but the low detailing allows us to adopt their face as a mask, and thereby understand their predicament more. I use to feel the same way as you, check out the book. I think it's written by Scott MacLeod.
There's a huge difference between fine art and corporate art. Corporate art makes money, fine art doesn't. If you want to make the big bucks, you gotta follow the rules untill you become and established artist. Its sad but true.

I disagree. And I agree with Gamoron.
I have seen an amazingly good cartoony animated infomercial for Amnesty International about child labour. And an extremely funny Scandinavian one on AIDS with a cartoon penis standing in front of a gate in the shape of a vagina...
The message for something is the upmost important part of the thing. Anything else is only there to support and to empahsize that message. If the message must be brought in a funny/cartoony/whatever way... so be it.
And IMO the only difference between "fine arts" and "commercial art" is that "fine arts" is made to be "hanging on a wall" (roughly speaking).
Did you know that all the old masters almost only did work they were asked to make, to make a profit and to pay the rent?
Whoa Dude... I think you should change that text before someone educates your mind with their fist...

ndat. I live in Toronto at Gerrard and Jarvis. Anytime you're in town you email before hand and try educating me with fisticuffs. Like Tom Petty said " I won't back down." Bring it. Seriously.
That attitude of yours is why the world is ****ed up in the first place.
Frye you haven't got a clue about fine art. Anything goes! A chick in London showed her bed. Used condoms lying all over it, greasy slimy sheets, the works. That's art! Apparently anyways.
You can use whatever subject you want including caricatures.
Thanks jeroentje, I'm behind you on art.

Time to wake up bro'
that's the same dumbass attitude that perpetuates shit like 9/11 and going to be causing more in the very near future.
BTW, How big is your SUV?:wise:
...sigh...
I guess I owe an explanation, I have no Idea how you guys interpreted this text. But here is how I took it, you are telling people who just had their loved ones taken away. That the cause of death was their fault for not showing sympathy to the killers. And Im sorry if you post that around in cities someone is going to hit you. Please by all means explain what it means because it seems everyone else is getting something else from it. Also I did say someone so I wasn’t suggesting I was going to come god knows how far to hit you. But if it’s a friendly competition you want I am obligated to fight you and will do so if Im in your area or you come to me.
--No hard feelings dude, if you didn’t mean it how I explained :P, which I hope you didn’t...

No, Its my attitude that fights for the ones I love and what I believe in. No matter the persecution or odds governing the situation. Prove me wrong and I will back down, until then stay out of my way...
I will not cause anything such as 911, all I do is stand here and if someone f#$%s with me or the ones I love then they have to worry.
How big is my SUV? Excuse me?

Where's your compassion?
Think about what brought on S11. It didn't happen for no reason.
You seem like a real tough-guy jock. With that 'tude hopefully you're one of the first people drafted when the draft does come. Then you'll really find out what kind madness that mentallity perpetuates
"until then stay out of my way..." You've got the typical attitude of a stupid f*ck who drives an SUV. Hence that comment.
If you really want to transend you typical George Wanker Bush close minded 91 point I.Q. way of thought go here:ADBUSTERS (http://adbusters.org/)

I apologize ndat. A misunderstanding then.
Someone or something somewhere is suffering.
- self explanatory. People everywhere are being screwed over by themselves or someone else.
Gamoron
08-20-2002, 06:00 AM
what have you done to stop it? do your bit and change.
- this is not meant to attack the bereaved. It's not meant as an attack at all. It's meant to be an eye opener. What happened on 9/11 is not good vs evil. The idiots that hijacked and drove those planes into the twins and those that encouraged them are fanatical zealots, but I'm not sure I'd call them evil. Their enraged because of American foreign policy. You're saying you'll fight for the ones you love, so are they. They chose terrorism because they couldn't go head on with American might. Who can? Maybe some of them hope terrorizing the american populace might get them to open their eyes on what the American government does worlwide. Many countries will gladly hand over war criminals. Not the American gov. Kissinger and others like him and the CIA are guilty of humanitarian crimes, they can be tried in the new international court of law, but there aint no way 'ol Bush is going to allow that.

I'm sorry, but Americans in general have a blatant ignorance of the rest of the world. Its broadcast worlwide. people globally are starving what do they see on their TV? Baywatch. Material America at its Glory. recently I watched that dog eat dog show. they asked one contestant. "What country in the AMERICAS has the largest land mass." i thought she'd for sure say Canada. Especially since she kept going on " I'm not sure, I'm not sure, oh oh oh ok ok I'm just gonna Spit it out...............................ASIA!"
D'oh!
On the Howard Stern show " where's the Eiffel tower?" (a corporate exec was asked this.) "um I don't know.... London?"
D'oh!
I doubt many of the Americans on this forum are like that. But the fact is the vast majority is. And they vote guys like Bush into power. Who wants to wage war on Afghanistan, the poorest nation in the world now, I'm sure. The taliban were idiots sure, but there was a lot of innocents there too.

Tell me did the American News cover the 4 Canadian troops that one of your pilots bombed?
They were killed and others were injured.
People have to realise that they affect other people globally. I'm a white guy. I haven't bought Nike's because they own sweat shops where they have there shoes made. Some are in the Philipines I think. Anyway I think it's wrong. My girl friend is Phillipino. She owns Nikes. Go figure, some people don't care. The people making the shoes want to work, but they know they are getting far less for their work then an American.
Did you know how much an employee for GM in Mexico makes. these guys do the same job an automotive worker in the states does and works maybe even harder on the line. But is only paid $80 american a week. Americans in GM on average make $21 american an hour.
Look. I don't agree with Grooveholmes, ADBUSTERS is preachy and contradictory. Their for the environment but they produce a magazine.

Take a look at Colors amgazine. Don't let the tie to Benetton fool you. this magazine shows you a picture of the world. the way it is.
http://www.benetton.com/colors/
Lets avoid another bunch of innocents being killed
- best way to avoid 9/11 is making sure that it doesn't happen again. Try to give a little. you can do it locally too. Oaklahoma happened because of disgruntled amercians.
hell just be aware. Its not that easy.
Paris, France ... I hate Baywatch (or TV programming in general) and I didn't vote for Bush.
Easy on the generalizations of Americans there, Gamoron. There is an equal amount of idiots globally.
No, I apologize it was my misunderstanding
Thanks for clearing that up :)
I guess I kinda spoke too soon, sorry about that
@ Grooveholmes
You would have to understand my life to understand...
I am no Jock, I may be as physical as them but my attitude is more of an outsider if you must know...
I would only be glad to be the first one to be drafted, if I believed in what I was fighting for.
I am no stranger to mental torment
I have had my IQ tested many times and I average from 160 to 170 and know that some one with a 91 IQ can have an open mind a be just as smart as anyone.
It doesn’t matter how smart the US president is, as you’ve probably seen the position means close to nothing.
Yes Im saying I will fight for the ones I love, I don’t care if their cause was divine or disgust with America. Yes they would be fighting for the same thing as I would, the people they love. But Its all formalities, you fusk with me I fusk back Truthfully there are many "ignorant" people here... I use that word because they aren’t necessarily stupid just limited by their situations in a different way then many others. Our country is run by media and government which are in turn run by money. So you can expect a deal of corruption and skewed views to be present. As for the game show situations, Im sorry but that is a general lack of knowledge.
I hate to say I told you so....wait...no, I like saying that. I told yah this would cause controversy. I would just drop the text and let the art speak for itself. Let the viewer decide what your satirizing.
I think political / social commentary pieces are great to do; but I've always thought it best to keep it out of a print portfolio (unless all someone does is political cartoons). You never know what views a potential client may possess. You may be pitching your ideas to future art director: NDAT (god help us all).
I read through some of these posts and found quite a bit of America bashing. I've never seen more stereotyping in my life. Without the U.S., the Mexican economy would collapse. Sweat shops are not a black and white issue. Places with sweat shops are generally over-populated and under resourced: bringing in outside employment is the only work these people have.

@Kirt. I'm sorry about the generalisations, I agree jerks are everywhere.
@Everyone. I'm not really trying to bash Americans. My sister in law is one, and so is my brother now that he has citizenship and lives in Seattle. Consider this though, the Bush administration is researching more into why Americans have such a bad global image. I mentioned EXAMPLES above. There is a generalisation that Canadians say Sorry often, even when not at fault. This is pretty much true. Some attributes are basically true about people of different countries. The english are stereotyped as fighting hooligans at Soccer matches. Basically true. Americans should simply look at why some people have a certain belief about them and consider its validity.
This has become an American issue suddenly, they take everything as a strike against them. I think thats part of the problem. I directed it at the West.

The wording on your text needs to be much more specific to be effective. If you're wanting people to react and actually do something, it would help if this poster provided a solution for people to help (ie. join amnesty international, volunteer time, money, donate blood, etc.) It would also help to know specifically who needs the help, where are they, and why. As it is now, it's too vague. Right now, the most intriguing part of the text for me is wondering what that mysterious "something" is that is suffering? a cat? a dog? a mule? What does that have to do with Sept. 11?
Obviously, this is just my opinion. I think posters tend to be more effective if they present some information, specific facts, for the viewer to think about.

thanks wildsheepchase. good crit. I think I'll make your changes. I'm starting to think this wasn't such a great idea. Price you pay though....
