Doh, I left the forum for a few weeks and I missed the start of the latest challenge. Oh well, here's my effort so far. It's sort of a miniature hot air balloon. :)

Expect an update soon, but feel free to critique and comment. Some advice on what to do next with the model would be useful.

[i](PS: Apologies to those who replied before the CG Talk overload. I didn't see any of the posts)

Shame your thread got sucked into the either.
Looking spectacular. One small crit is the canopy looks too thick due to the way it curls under.
Don't know if it's possible in this challenge but the canopy is crying out for translucency.

really nice idea!! and good start on the modeling, I however think that you should put a little boy\girl in the shoe, but that's just me :)

keep on working :)

Good work on the details, but be careful with that lighter, you might set everything on fire :)

Hey there (...)

I love it!! Great concept and mood. As for modeling though, I don't know where your going to take this great model next, but if your still working on it, then, how about lengthening the shoelace ends until it dangles a bit under the shoe. It's always great having things hanging around. Other than that, if you got the time, maybe create a hint of ground in the far, far, far distance and keep it cloudy. That way, it would feel funny and sad at the same time.

Otherwise, great work. Looking forward to seeing where you take this mini mouse next;)

What a clever idea!!! I love it! As far as suggestions go...I'd like to see some form of rigging for the navigation of the shoe...How will he turn and stuff without it? Perhaps as simple as some strings tied to the fans...
Anyway, good work and I look forward to your next post!

Here's an update using the critiques I got so far. There's now a paperclip-powered

steering mechanism, a thinner canopy, and a higher canopy to stop the lighter from

setting everything on fire. ;)

[image removed to keep the thread size down]

As always, crits are welcome and an update will appear soon.

Other than that, if you got the time, maybe create a hint of ground in the

far, far, far distance and keep it cloudy. That way, it would feel funny and sad at

the same time.

Good idea, but are we allowed to do scenes in this challenge?

Hmmmm, well, this is what was said on the matter, but I am still not sure if we are allowed:

umm that's a bit elaborate, don't worry yourself over making a full fledge scene, that's not what we're after, concentrate at the task at hand, then when that's done you can go wild on the scene when the challenge is over...

There were small scenes in the previous contest and personally I am doing a small one for this contest, but . . . maybe you shouldn't to be safe.

As for the shoe, I just wanted to elaborate on that a bit. This is what I meant:) Dangling shoe laces would give it a sense of movement. Otherwise, it looks alot better with the canopy higher up, good work. Can't wait to see more!!

Nice job so far. That shoe rocks man :) Like the binac's too

What soft your using? Wireframes? Nobody else asked so I figured I would :D

What soft your using?

Maya 4, all polygons (except for the canopy and shoelaces which are NURBS).

Wireframes?

As for the shoe, I just wanted to elaborate on that a bit. This is what I

meant Dangling shoe laces would give it a sense of movement.

Oh I see. But the bit you've extended in the image attachment is actually the

mouse's tail. The laces are connecting the shoe to the canopy (I guess image clarity

is sacrificed when you do a model all in one colour at PAL resolution :( ). But

having said that, the flowing laces do look a lot better, so I'm changing my model

to match it.

There were small scenes in the previous contest and personally I am doing a

small one for this contest

You're doing SCENERY in your contest entry?!? I've seen how complex your concept

drawing is. I'll be impressed if you even finish the main model in time, let alone

the scenery (if you do I reckon you'll win this month's challenge btw).

As for my picture, I might draw a quick Photoshop background image for it. But for

the most part, I want to make the model as good as it can be before I think about

backgrounds.

Update 4.0:

I simply love it ! Parachute patchwork is neat! But i would made these bags with sand smaller , now it looks they are too heavy for this kind of parachute .Also for some ideas i would add some kind of cap..maybe baseball one or these leather , that pilots had in WWI ? to pilot , now enough of this its cool and my favourite amongst this challenge , keep up!

Darn bearutiful work. I really like the cap you gave the mouse...it adds that extra umpf. Have you taken a look at rule 8 (for the pilot)? I just did myself...

8) The character should show one of the following emotions, proud, angry, frustrated, scared(freaked out)

You may want to incorporate this into your model. Other than that, Awesome work!

This wasn't a model you already had was it? Be honest :)

I knew I forgot something. :) Oh well, that's what I'll do for the next update.

In all honesty, I made every part of this model specifically for the challenge. I didn't do any WIP's because I didn't think I had the time (I didn't join the challenge until about a week ago). I just started modelling right away, and added new ideas as I had them.

An update, with basic shader colours on it. Any textures are kept to a minimum because texturing basic colours onto a model is easier than painting many individual faces one colour ;) . As for the mouse's facial expression, I've opted for scared, but I've tried to make it subtle.

How do those fans run? Not that it really matters.

nice job, only crit is that the mouses tail prob wouldnt be so relazed if it was scared

Looking awesome! I would kinda like to see the mouse another color than white to help to seperate it from the shoe. In addition, the mouse's expression doesn't quite seem to be scared yet. Perhaps gaping his mouth open or flattening his ears back would help to accomplish that. Either way, these are just suggestions. I love this piece and am excited to see it finished. Great work!

How do those fans run?

They're battery powered (I modelled an area on the fans for where the batteries go in, but it isn't really visible on a render this small).

They are supposed to be those cheap hand-held fans that people always buy whenever the weather gets hot.

only crit is that the mouses tail prob wouldnt be so relazed if it was scared

True, but I think I've fixed it in the new version.

I would kinda like to see the mouse another color than white to help to seperate it from the shoe. In addition, the mouse's expression doesn't quite seem to be scared yet. Perhaps gaping his mouth open or flattening his ears back would help to accomplish that.

You're right about the face. I tried putting a gaping mouth on him, but it made his face look too elongated and he lost his mouse-like profile. So I've tried to compensate by doing some stuff with the ears, tail and eyes to express the fear a bit better.

As for the colour. I think I'm going to stick with white, because I always imagined him as one of those super-intelligent lab-mice (he would have to be, to build a hot air balloon out of a shoe :) ). But I've taken your input on board and tried to make him a different shade of white to the shoe.

------------------

Anyway, here's the latest update with all the new changes, plus some scenery (I know, scenery doesn't count in this challenge, but I took one look at Apt Pupil's thread and got scared ;) ).

I will try not to be to hard on you. I should start off with saying that I really like your model. Very original, well done and funny.
But that background you put up. It clashes to much. It looks to much like bad CG, itīs so confusing because the actual model looks really good. You really should take a good look at that background, maybe scrap it altogether or make something different.
If this is just very WIP, forgive me for the hard words. Otherwise I hope you can take them due to the high level of your construction.

I hope I havenīt ruined your day. But I think it shouldīve been said.

Now for some constructive suggestions. If you are going to stick with the water. Make the waves minimal, that way you will get away with a good looking water shader. Making waves look good is really hard. Or play more with displacement mapped waves to make it less uniform.
The rock bakground should be given more depth. One thing to try out could be to have large parts of stone go out in the water. Right now it looks to much like just a image backdrop.

If you want composition tips do tell me.

Mikael P:

Don't worry, you didn't ruin my day. I appreciate your honesty, and I'm glad you pointed out the flaws in the background before the challenge was over. :)

I got a couple of other projects going on at the moment, so it's going to take a while to do a replacement background. But until then, here's a provisional fix for the image, without the waves or cliffs, and with a colour-corrected sky to remove any clashing.

Good. Honesty do pay of (sometimes atleast). I like the new background. It looks much better.
You should start working on the light now. To resemble outdoor lighting, more diffuse light. Maybe colour correct your model to blend more into the background. Add a blue tint to it.
