View Full Version : realtime USS Reagan
CADster 10-11-2004, 06:07 PM i think it came out pretty well. Its a realtime model, but a bit expensive (no matter, its was what was wanted) besides, what was realtime and is reatime today are worlds apart.
this model will have lots of interactivity.... elevators will work, crane will work, and all hanger bays will have working doors. catapult will also work (blast shield will raise, steam run will work)
23,780 triangles (budget was 23,500  ), 3- 1024x1024 maps and 2- 512x512 maps (4 1024 maps was the cap .. so this offsets the poly count :D ).
build, unwrap, and texture = 54+ hours total my time (I had a week to finish, so it spilled over into the weekend .... i had to work several long hours).

Most excellent!
What did you model this in?

Looks really good. What's it going to be used for? The poly count and LOD are way too high for a RTS or something...is this going into a flight sim?

The poly count and LOD are way too high for a RTS or something...is this going into a flight sim?yup... a sim, but for the goverment. this along with the other ships i did about a month ago are for a simulation on countering attacks on carrier groups. the LOD would not be bad at all on this. clip the railings and life pods out and it drops to about 15k polies... still too high to put into c&c generals thow :)
still have an oiler ship and rapid (re)supply ship to make.
it was modeleled in lightwave, unwrapped and smoothed in max. textures were made in photoshop.

Now this is amazing. Maybe some wires and texture sheets? Model is really excellent. Great job!

some major changes came down the pipe on this model....i was just told that 5 additional CVN carriers are to be made from this model .... but what i had to explaint to them is that each CVN has different islands and radar layouts, no generic carrier will really be accurate enough to tell them apart ..... so i was then told that no time was allocated for the additional hours needed to model the 5 different islands correctly or the different radars ..... what idiots.
the flightdeck is getting completely rebuilt. all stripes will be redone as decals (no one said anything when the model was started about getting close enough to this model to launch aircraft  ) and the deck texture is being made into a tile. of course this will have its own set of problems ... like 'crawlies' when you back away from the carrier because the decal triangles will not mip as well as it would being all texture. and to add more good news to this already happy post - ive lost 1024x1024 worth of texture realestate, its been swapped for a 256x256 tile (i cant wait untill this little tile is seen ... anyone want to place bets on the manangers complaining about the repeating of the pattern ? ... of course they wont say anything untill AFTER im finished :madder:)
ill post the new version after its done... right now im putting out a completly different set of fires.

Yikes! Sorry to hear about the rework. I've been there and it's a bitch when they don't make it clear what they want.

Good job! It must have been fun to do.
I would love to see some texture sheets and wires too.
