Hello!

I'm wondering what is the best GI (global illumination) system (Brazil, V-Ray, you know about another ones?)
2) is there any GI engine free?
3) is there any way to simulate GI without a GI engine, only with standard max lights?

:bounce: tell me!!

I don't know too much about this.. but no one else seems to be responding.. so here it goes

you can create a GI look by making a circular array of instanced omni lights. I do three rings of 36 lights, and set their multipliers down to about .05

you can also find scripts that do this for you. I saw on on these boards that also set up falloff also. search for fake GI or GI script

leme know whatcha find

Brazil still do a free beta but as time goes by it's getting more limitations. (www.splutterfish.com) When Mystique goes public that is to be free. Although you can do the skydome effect with Max's lights, it can take as long as a GI render in other programmes, but in my experience the shadows are problematic.. mind you I have nearly always found Max's shadows problematic. :p

Fabrizzio, la opcion que yo prefiero es Brazil, es gratuito el beta y es MUY MUY MUY estable.

GI se puede imitar pero nunca vas a obtener ese resultado con las sombras suaves.... te recomiendo vayas a

Here is a link to such a script called LightMesh. Very useful it creates all the lights for you attaching them at points on a selected mesh and even uses the texture map attached to the mesh to colour each light.

fabrizzzio, just so you have all the possible options, there are a few other scripts for use with the default scanline renderer.

http://www.scriptspot.com/bobo/mxs3/skydome/

http://www.trinisica.com/sub_script-documentation.asp?lv=2&mode=1&script=1

and remember, GI is a great thing, but many times good lighting will give a very desirable effect.

I've been struggling with GI for ages, on how to produce GI with real world attributes without forking out the big bucks for the renderers. My solution was to write some plugins. They expanded into quite complicated little add ons, And should be ready for distribution in about two weeks. I've had tons of emails so Am currently adding on new features. Version two will be an actual renderer. These also simulate radiosity.

You can check out the intial tests and progress descriptions here:

The dome of lights thing doesn't simulate GI. It simulates a skylight.

[simplified] GI is the bouncing of light around.

GI doesn't = skylight!

"Global illumination may be considered light that is cast from the sun, or an omnipresent light that seems to come from no particular source, surrounding us on all sides."

Sun is in the sky? skylight? Does a dome surround us on all sides? These scripts may not be perfect algorythms, but they are a decent alternative to often lenghty GI renders. My point in posting the scripts was that, there are alternatives.
