View Full Version : Character+environment - Kran in town
boonet 08-16-2002, 01:11 PM Hi.
This is my first post of my images on this board, so please don't jump on my corpse from the beginning. ;)
This image is a test I did to find the look and the atmosphere to give to a cut-scene I'm working on for a project (the open source game Planeshift). The city in background is just a flat lambert render of actual ingame house models, while the character (a Kran) is a pose of a slightly smoothed character ingame model (he's supposed to be a bit squared: he's made of living stone. :) ).
I composited the background and the character an AFX, but i'm not satisfied with the lens flare (anybody knows of a good lens flare plugin?).
Modeled and rendered in Maya.
Others scenes will come (time permitting), with differnt places, characters and mood.
Thank you for your comments.

Thanx for your comments, guys.
Paconavarro: Yes, I think i might prepare some other pictures to show it at different angles; right now I'm working on other parts of the project, so maybe It'll take a couple of days before I post them, but they'll come for sure. :) And about the DOF: ahem... I'm pumping it so much to hide the fact that the houses are low-res things and their shading is not very sofisticated ATM. :)
Gamoron: Planeshift it's still in early alpha stages, so only a tech demo is availabel; maybe in september a new release will come. You can check at www.planeshift.it for info (and if you want to contribute to the project too ;) )
Maybe I'll try to set it in other environments too, to see where it fits better.

I like the style of the character. Nice render, too. The background may be low rez texture, but the DOF is working well for the piece.
I'm very interested to see a human-type (human, dwarf, halfling...) done in the same stylized manner. Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Good looking character and render but the pose is really static and lifeless. Oppse the hips and shoulders a little and lose the twining on the arms. Other than that, Great work!!!
wow I think stoney want's to hug me :)

Hi there's an update: It's the same rocky guy in the EXACT same pose as before (so that's maybe why it seems a bit static ;) ), but I wanted to have a different environment to show you his back side. About the environment: It' s the classic 3-hours setup: a very simple subd model to define the overall shapes and a procedural shader I did for another project to shade and displace the landscape. That's it. I hope I can get many comments, to raise the quality of my work and maybe get some stars someday :D
thanks
Ok,
stand up and look at something
look at the way u are standing right now, put the guy in the same pose.
arms down, maybe one arm pointing at the object?
and put some rocks and maybe grass on the floor
nice env, but strange pose
just keep screwing around with the scene until u got what u want
:)
hope it helps "I think not:)"
oh and his texture is really tiled, make some crackes or somthin
look at a real rock and use it as reference.
I like his design though

Nice enviroment, a bit more his style.....it's time to change his pose for sure. Give the character as much attention as the enviroment. He's beginning to look more like a guy who has been turned into stone, instead of a guy being made of stone.
He'd make a nice lawn ornament.....hehe:)
Anyhow, keep up the good work.
.....and thanks for using the ol' lens flare, tastefully.

Thank you for comments.
As you have pointed out, his pose is not right: I just posed him in 1 way and then started experimenting a bit with his surroundings. Naturally his posture and attitude will change totally when I'll start animating it, but for now my guideline is to test as many environments I can, without loosing time.
About the lens flare: is there some other richer filter I can find around to use with AFX/Combustion2 ?
Wi_2: Ok for the stones, but maybe the grass doesn't fit with the setting I have in my mind.
Thank you for the feedback. I'll come back with some other environment.
I really like the 2nd environment
and I just mean for u to put some stuff on the floor.
it can be whaterver u want :)
keep it up! and maybe you'll get those stars

Actually, I was being sincere about the lens flare. I think it helps the overall composition.
I was just referring to the some times extreme lens flare usage in some CG.
As long as it's done tastefully....
