I have an idea. Let's do a BIG OpenGL test in modo ! :)
It will be informative for us owners, and it could be useful for Luxology too...
---

Here are the rules:
1. Download a small, and free program called: FRAPS (http://www2.fraps.com/FRAPS232.EXE). Install, then launch, and minimize the application.
2. Set your screen resolution to 1280 X 1024
3. Start modo duh... :)
4. Load the layout called : "modo Default"
5. Load the "hippo.lwo" from the content meshes.
6. Hide the work plane and the grid, and make sure the viewport is in smooth shaded mode, and the hippo has wireframe on him.
7. Make sure the hippo is in modo-subd mode (TAB, not Shift-TAB) and the subd level ("+" and "-" keys) is not the lowest, but the second one. I think that's the default.
8. Hit "a" to fit the hippo on the screen.
9. Now give your hippo a spin with an "ALT-RightClick" -> And Read Your FPS.
10. Post it here! :) (with your config details)

A modifed viewport layout gives me higher FPS (~46)

ATi Radeon 9600 Pro using Catalyst 4.9 drivers gives me about 14-15fps with the default layout, 17-18 with the modified viewport. Other important specs of my computer are: Athlon64 3400+, 1Gb of 400MHz DDR-RAM.

Thanks Para for the participation !
You have a good config, i think you should have a higher FPS... but let's wait for the other results. :)

No I shouldn't, the 9600 series isn't very good at all in OpenGL. D3D is where that budget card really shines :)

I am curious about how do the Quadros perform...

I just love how modo's GL performance is much better than Lightwave's.
In modo i get around 46 FPS - as I stated above, in LW8 modeler (with same settings) i get 19 FPS :rolleyes:

edit: I forgot that i only had the first layer active. With eyes: modo: 41 LW: 17

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, +- keys dont do anything, neither does alt-right click, I'm using maya navigation so I just hit the "/ " for a viewport navigation.

Cheers.

Sure ! :)

It's not too easy... but go to THIS FORUM (http://forums.guru3d.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=18), and read the posts.
I think this is a GOOD THREAD (http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=95150)

The OpenGL speed seems faster than LW, but how about the transformations? I'm curious about the performance between lw's modeler and modo when you move/scale/rotate an freezed polygonal object. I did a little test between lw's modeler, C4D and houdini (unfortunatly, there is currently no modo demo), and lw's modeler is a lot faster than houdini, and very close to C4D... is modo faster or slower than lw on this kind of transformations? How about the dragnet and magnet on freezed objects?
Since there is no demo, it is important for me to know if modo have the same speed on theses every days transformations...

Thanks

For me, moving a 14,000 poly, football mesh was alot more responsive in modo than in modeler.

Cheers.

Akryls:

I have tried some deformations on a freezed hippo :) (~80.000 polys) and while the viewport manipulation was fast as a lightning, the deformations were pretty laggy. But this is probably hardware specific, i don't have a high-end config. I've tried dragnet, magnet, twist... etc. If you compare it to LW... well... about the same, but some things are slower -> ON MY MACHINE

Cool thread. :thumbsup: Anyone who has both want to also do a comparison with other apps such as xsi, silo, lw, wings, etc. on the same geometry?

I'd like to explain what v-sync is so people are not confused that it does something that would improve performance.

V-sync, known as Vertical Sync, is the time the monitor tracing ray, going vertical, will make a full pass of the screen.

Vsync should only be disabled when benchmarking so that the videocard and processor are not being limited by the display. Frame rates will appear higher with vsync off but the amount of information displayed is limited by your monitor in that instance. A monitor with an 85 Hz refresh rate will only display 85 frames per second even if the videocard is rendering 400 frames a second. The visual quality may decline as a result also because some frames could be skipped as a result of excess rendering so the interpolation between the first frame and the next frame displayed could be off resulting in 'tearing' or jerkiness.

Some usless knowledge, to which I add another usless tidbit... Coders from the 80's and early 90's used vsync to make things go smoother, faking the appearance of speed, by measuring/timing the refresh of their code with the monitors rate.

VGA BIOS interrupt 0x10 on x86 procs for all the nerds:

void set_mode_13h()
{
__dpmi_regs r;
r.x.ax = 0x13;
__dpmi_int(0x10, &r);
}
