View Full Version : Velociraptor
chrisrw 10-09-2004, 08:14 PM I'm currently texturing my raptor for an animation I'm creating. I first painted a bump map for her, and was really happy with the result. I thought creating the color map would be easy, just make a base color, then paint in some dirt between the scales and wrinkles. But I havent been very happy with the color results.
At this point, I've really only been working on the face, so the body has been pretty much ignored (except the base color). I really like the painting of the 'black' colors on her face (the dark brown with the lighter oranges running through it through the cracks between scales), but I'm leary of the rest of the face.
I have a specularity and glossiness map on the model, and Im pretty happy with it. The skinning still needs a lot of work, but I'm not worrying about that at the moment.
Help would be MUCH appreciated, thank you!

Looks like you're off to a great start :). Can't wait to see the finished texture and model.

great model! a few texture problams i've spoted- the chin/neck has a smudged texture.
the back specular is to bright- try spreding it around and toneing it down a bit :)
just a thought maybe add some hair on top of the head...

This is very nice work!
Can you show/tell us a little more about it?
What program you used? show us a wireframe?
I also looked at your webpage. Cool robots, and some good character animation too.
I dont agree with the other comment about the texture. Did you check out his Dino WIP?....Sorry in advance, for that.

Damn. That's excellent work.
I know you asked for help on the textures, but I don't see anything wrong with them at all. My eye for spotting flaws in 3d images must not be developed enough because it sure looks like finished work to me! Animate away!
And wires. Would love to see a wireframe of her.

Congradulations!
-I love the shape of her head, better than the ones in Jurracic park.
-The toes really look good, as though they are supporting her weight.
-The upper arm seems thin towards the elbo.
-Her claws on her hands look a bit like fingernails.

I am looking forword to seeing more. Thanks J

Thanks everyone.
I agree, her 'fingernails' aren't accurate. I think the issues with her upper arm are skinning (which I haven't finished) issues.
Does anyone else have any suggestions on things to make the texture look more realistic?
Thanks again!

Ehem...It's great. Seriously, but that expression on the face makes that looks abit "whee, what on earth i'm doing i here". It makes me laugh. Maybe i just feel abit idiotic today :)

Sceme is right. It's a great model but the expression says "Oh, oh. I shouldn't have eaten that extra sheep for supper". :)

Hi Chris, Excellent Raptor! It's looks like she's abt to steal some Tyrannosaur eggs!:) I agree with joel3d, the shape of your head is more interesting, show us those razor teeth!
You've done a great job on the texture details, i know it's not easy to get the desired results, you've got to try softening the overall look maybe with a shellec layer? Right now the surface looks a little 'hard'. The head looks better as you mentioned.
How abt some displacement mapping? Might help losen up the lower chin/neck area with some skin folds and veins etc...the knee cap should also be more rounded, since it's a hard bone.
The calf muscles could be a little more rounded too.
Nostrils?
Nice job on the feet!
Anyway, just my 2 cents. I love dinosaurs too.

Thank you for all the replies, they are all greatly appreciated!
AdrianCher - I love your T-Rex model, it is really fantastic!
I've been working on setting up her skeleton, does anyone know how to (in Max 5) set up her foot so she can roll up on the end of her toes and at that first toe joint?
Here are some updates:

Your raptor looks amazing! Texturing is looking very clean, well done.
Probally just me, but it would be cool to see some old cuts and stuff that have healed over.. She looks very well kept and I would have imiagined these dinos to get into a fight or two, Looks amazing even without.

Does anyone have any good pointers, suggestions, help on boning? I'd like to do her as 'correct' as possible. Also, Im looking for pointers on how to rig (and bone) her feet, I'd like to be able to roll her foot up from her toes. I use Max.
Thanks for the help

I dont know much about Dinos but is their skin so dry or is this caused by the lighting setup you have?
I think same goes with the eye......

Sorry to keep bugging you all, but I just thought I'd ask if anyone has any suggestions/tips/hints/info/ect on setting up a good skeleton (especially in the leg and feet of her), and also for info on how I can rig her feet to roll up on her toes.
Thanks for all the great praise and ideas, I appreciate it!

well, in the max help files...F1, under the bone setup section, look at the foot part. It shows you how to make a foot roll. I think what you want is in the tutorial.
