Various people keep telling me that (self)-learning Maya can take from a
few months up to a few years depending on the person.
But what is an average estimation of the time needed to be able to start creating
simple 3D graphics?
To begin with I will start with a weeks training at a place called 3D world, which I
hope will give me a good start.
How long did it take you guys to really get going?
Is Maya personal edition any good to practise with?

Well personal learning edition is great, basically its maya complete with a watermark, it has mental ray now which is also pretty cool, and some plugins wont work. It depends on your background, ie any previous experience with a 3D package, its a pretty steep learning curve, the important thing is to never give up, you can save your pennies and self teach yourself there are a plethora of dvd's and maya books available. Maya has a lot of depth and you're not realistically going to learn everything in a couple of months, best to start with some basics, modelling, texturing and rendering should keep you busy for a little while, then theres dynamics, MEL, rigging and animation. You just have to be prepared to go all the way and keep your chin up, and ask for help when you need it, there are plenty of helpful pro's around and as long as your prepared to do a little research (ie: use the forum search button)and other legwork yourself you should get a helping hand when you need it.

Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of maya.
