I've been trying to figure this out, because I'm trying to figure out the best way to make the textures for my character models.

I thought Maya 4 had a way to let you paint right on the character. Does anyone know how?

If not, I'm going to have to figure out a better way to do this.

After painting some main lines on it, I wanted to then export the texture file and enhance it in Photoshop.

Hey dude...theres a whole tutorial in the manual "instant Maya" that tells you how to do this. Its in the "painting" section, lesson 3. It assumes that you already know how to layout UVs, which you'll need to have done before you can begin painting.
Personally, I wasn't too impressed with the painting tools. Stick with Photoshop if you want the best results, IMO.
