A couple years ago I was hired to create all of the artwork for an independantly developed game called Goose Chase, a cartoony 3d platformer. After the success of the first game Gil Zussman, the developer, has hired me once again to provide all the artwork for his next project, a classic 2d arcade style action fighting game, ala Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, etc. but with a futuristic Cyborg theme.

So I figured I would post the artwork here as it progresses.

Here is the main character, a sexy female cyborg. I commisioned the concept art to be based around Danger Girl-esque proportions, so that I could finally put my generic comic female model, that I made about two years ago, to some good use.

The models are going to be high poly, but not with too much micro-detail, since in the end they will be rendered to ~250 pixel sprites.

Nice work. :) I've seen the projects you have on your website and I like your stuff. Are you responsible for texturing the model as well, or just the modeling? If so, can't wait to see her textured. Looks great either way.

A lot of the proportion decisions and lack of details were intentional, in order to get everything to read well at the final resolution.

really cool work.

nice concept and follow through to the end result...

just one thing i wanna mention is her hair in the final sprites look a little strange...kinda like those play dough hair things...:buttrock:

just a personal preference, but i think the hair looks too cg compared to the rest of the model...

Hey, man. Big fan of yours. I go to your site all the time and send it to tons of ppl. I can see you're using the superhero girl from your site as the base mesh. You must please please please put up some tutorials on your site. Your modeling and texturing skillz are supreme in my mind.

The model is looking great. Very MAXIMOish. especially the concept art. Very much like Susumu Matsushita's work.

Everyone check out Eric's site at: http://www.erikasorson.com/ you will not be dissapointed.

Keep up the good work,

Very nice work as well and I see you've tweaked the anatomy from the original concept art. :)

What can I say, very impressive! I gotta ask you about how you model. Do you use splines and nurbs and convert to poly or old fashioned box-modeling or extruding profile method, etc.?
I'm curious cause your models have this sense of intricate tonal values and depth that are hard to achieve with characters sometimes.

Very nice. Did you create the concepts too? It's a very cool style. I especially like the left arm and the leg with wires.

A question: in the wires of the girl, the hair pieces look different than the render. The render looks more complex. How did you do that? Displacement map?

The concepts were created by Mike Corriero. The hair pieces on the girl are detailed using good old fashioned bump maps.

Here is the weapon of choice for Goon B:

Holy crap, this is really impressive work. The concept sketches (thanks for posting those, btw) look alot like the way I do them. Your 3D work closely matches the 2D stuff you comissioned. The only problem I have is with the back of the girl's legs, behind the knee. It looks like (from the renders) that it juts out too much.

Are all of these characters including the drones going to be ..Playable?? If you know..Hey Mike!

You play as the Cyborg Chic. The other characters are enemies you fight against. That's how it will work in the single player mode at least. I don't know if there are other modes planned, but it would be cool if there was a deathmath or team play or something where you could control the other characters. I'll have to bring that up to Gil.

Hey thanks for posting these, Erik. They look great, and it's cool to see them in raw form and then all pretty for the game. Great concepts by Mike, too. You should let us all know when the game is available. Is there a site for this company or anything?

Can you explain a bit how the game will look like. I mean developing a sprite based game today just deserves some words dont you think.

Great work on all the models!

Gil Zussman
10-26-2004, 07:30 PM
The game will be for those who misses these good old Beat 'em Up games (Golden Axe / Streets of rage / Double Dragon) - If you liked them, you'll surly like this one.

The idea is to create a game that will work on almost every system (hence no 3d-models/shaders/ect.) although it will be in a pseudo 3d enviroment (isometric, if you wish). There will be also some nice improvements, mainly gameplay-wise, but thats all be told once the game will be finished.

I'm also reworking the last game, Goose Chase (which also starred here, giving Erik his well deserved CG-talk Choice Award). The patch will be a great improvement to what you can now see (and download from my website listed below) just like artists here revise their work to improve it and their skills, I decided to revise the last game and make it better as a mean to make the upcoming (Cyborg Beat 'em Up) work even more.

Been playing goose chase in my spare time. Pretty cool. Reminds me a little of Torneko's Daiboken (http://www.square-enix.co.jp/dragonquest/t3gba/) on the PS2 in Japan and even plays a little similar.(old school gameplay is still quite popular there right now).

Look forward to more of your guy's work.

On a side note, have you tried putting your game up on garage games?(www.garagegames.com (http://www.garagegames.com))
It's an idependant game makers site.

Here are a couple of poses from the animations by Rod Stafford, a terrific animator and friend of mine, who actually worked on one of my favorite 3d sprite games of all time: Oddworld: Abes Oddysee.

MIKECORRIERO

Great Pose shots from the animations. Any chance of seeinga cycle run or animation quicktime video?

I'm proud to have contributed to this game, I loved double dragon and all the old isometric beat-em up style classics.

Gil Zussman@- When you say almost every system, will this be for Consoles like X-box, PS2, Gamecube?? or just PC, MAC etc?

You have a website for mr. Rod Stafford? I've always been a fan of the motion in the old Abe games. Trying to learn as much motion as I can.

Hey Erik,

Nice to see an update on this thread, these promo action poses are too cool, Now im all excited and ready to play this game. Hope things are going well with work and all.

I've been keeping busy, I'm about to finish some work I did for a short story by Wendy Brotherlin entitled "Shadow Walker" which was very interesting. Once I have completed the work, if you have some space on the site perhaps you can add it to the concept section. Once I'm finished with that, I have some other book related work as well.

Hope to see more updates on "project cyborg" soon. ;) keep up the good work.
