CGTalk - Help with Unwrap

hey all im a noob in texturing but iv decided to give it a go but im not sure what method of unwrap to use becouse if i use from window i get horrible stretching on the sides but if i use lscm i can never get it to work. so what do all you people use and how do you use them? and got any tutorials?
