OK, before I start a rant, would someone kindly go and play with the snap tools for awhile and then tell me how they are supposed to work.......please?! Wits end here!

The docs cover them in scattered references, but not much else, that I can see anyway.

I don't know where to begin with this, which is why I'm asking how others are getting on with it.

You can apparently snap to edges........yes, you can, figured that out............but only to the centre of an edge, nowhere else. Is that right? Surely not?

The action centre setting that works the best for snapping is Selection Centre Auto Axis. Others do and sort of make sense, sort of, and then others again don't snap at all. It seems very inconsistent.

Snap to grid - can't get that to work at all. Trying to snap a vertex results in the vertex flying all over the place, anywhere except where I want it.

Snap to guides? Well, guides only appear when you switch the snap menu to Guides. I really haven't figured these yet, let alone how to snap to them. I'd like to believe that guides are like locators in Maya, but they don't seem as useful or robust.

Maya's snapping options work well and obviously. Modo's I just don't get.

Would appreciate any help.

Thanks.

Julian.

Hi,
I'm far from a professional, so maybe i cant help u much:). I'm still trying to figure out how to do aligning says align mesh A to mesh B.
For the snapping, try use Action center "Element" instead of "Selection Centre Auto Axis".
First, select Action center "Element", > select a tool (ie Move)
2.Select Snap (ie Geometry) choose Geometry Snap Mode (ie Vertex, may increase the Tightness)
3.LMB click on the Element (i used to click on the vertex) use the handle to move till snap to the target vertex, or by click and drag the "element" to snap the target vertex.

hope this may help.

Cheers.

OK, I've had a calmer and less rant-filled look at snapping in Modo. Still working on it, but some stuff is alot clearer.

Snapping to the grid is OK. By default, the distance setting is at 100%, and that was the problem, why in fact the cursor appeared to be flying all over the place. Reduce that to say 20%, and you can move the mouse between grid squares, and only snap when it gets near to a 'vertex' between two grid lines.

Now someone posted me about how to build a preset to snap along a curve, which I am about to have a go at, but using plain edge snapping and the move tool, you can only snap to the centre of an edge, likewise a polygon, which I guess makes sense, though snapping anywhere on a poly would be handy sometimes. Though again, I guess you cannot snap to a non-planar poly.........

But, I can still only snap with the Selection Centre Auto Axis. There has to be a reason for this, but I can't see it yet.

Snapping to guides also works fine - that funnily enough does allow you to snap and move along the guide, pretty much how you would like to move along an edge. Still don't fully get guides, and how they work, but working on it!

Sigh.....so little time so much frustration!!!

Julian.
