View Full Version : OT Play game off PC instead of CD ?
RorrKonn 10-08-2004, 03:03 AM Have a game beyond good and evil and when it goes from one scene to another scene at times the game will crash.the Tutorials that came with C4D9 would Drag some if I played them off the CD so I loaded the CD on to the PC and they play fine now.so thought to load the game on the PC.have disk 3 on the PC but when I go to play the game it will say load Disc 3.
Any clues on how to get the game to play off the PC ?
Thanks

sure you can do it, but i think it's illegal to some degree
although very off topic, i agree that cd's are slow when loading levels, some games allow you to run a full installation, some don't right?

ah, I am not much of a gamer so I have no idea.
I thought ya could load any thing on a CD to ya PC.
why would it be illegal to load a game I $$$ on my PC ?
Alt to be illegal to sell a game that crashes all the time.

Personally I use gamecopyworld.com Our tablet pc has no cd drive, so we install everything to the harddrive then use the no-cd patches. In fact I use them on my regular desktop machine because I can't be bothered changing discs.
In most cases theyre just using the cd as a cheap dongle

Unfortunately, by using those "no cd" patches people are playing an indirect part in a copyright infringement mess. While you might indeed be the licensed user, you're using a patch which may or may not have been devised using some method of reverse engineering. After all, they don't pull these patches out of thin air. In essence, you're becoming an accessory of sorts. It's like the wheelman in a bank robbery. You're not actually robbing the bank, but you are driving the car.
Where this issue gets a little unclear, for me at least, is whether or not this "accessory" issue actual exists in civil copyright infringement. It most certainly would exist in felony infringement, but civil infingement might be another story altogether. Either way, its a legal mess that can only really be stopped by cutting it off at the source (ie. the hack writers & distribution sites). Its nearly impossible & certainly impractical to go after each and every person who uses a "no cd". Actual prosection is even more questionable. (Then again, just look at the RIAA tactics.)
What malc0lm proposes walks a fine legal line. On the one hand, it isn't illegal to make a backup copy of a program for archival purposes. On the other hand, that isn't your intention. Does that make it illegal? Not necessarily. However, when you opened your product, you agreed to certain terms of use. You might be breaking those terms. If anything, it could be argued that the terms constitute a contract and that by circumventing their CD dongle you're actually in breach of that contract. This might not be enough for a criminal case, but it could meet the burden for a civil one.
Just some food for thought.

I am not understanding all this.
I have rippers, burners.
I don't want to burn the game just wanted to play the game.
The path points to D Drive, all I need is the path to point to where the games at on the PC.
I know I have a old 3D card GeForce 2 MX 400, 64 RAM.
my D Drive is sorta old to.
only have a few games.
War Craft, it plays fine
Star Wars, it plays fine
Beyond good and evil it crashes danget.
I'm thinking it's a hardware conflict
maybe with my geforce 2 card but the store said it would play on my PC.
maybe D drive.got about 10 music CD they all but one will play on my PC.
haven't a clue why that one will not play on the PC.
but it plays fine on stereo.
if I could play it off the PC I would no if it's the D Drive or not.
think it would be alot easier to play games on Sony,Nintendo.
that way ya wouldn't worry about conflicts and crashes.
Locks our to keep honest people honest.
I don't care to steal nothing,I don't mess with Warez.
everything I have I paid for.since I paid for it I will do what I want with it.
Some app's go to extreme with Reg# security to the point they aggravate paying customers.
CC aggravated me to the point I refuse to use there app.

The problem is, I don't care. The games company has put copy protection on the disc because they don't trust their customers. My way of saying 'screw you' to them is to do whatever I feel like doing with the game, ie. stripping out their irritating protection crap and using it how I wish. If they think for a moment that copy protection will prevent pirated copies in the lsightest bit they must be mad.
Hardware dongled max and xsi are about 3 clicks away, what makes them think that requiring the disc will affect their sales? All it means is that when little Jimmy is playing Quake 4, little Jane can't. Jane isn't going to buy another copy, shes going to wait her turn.

Should i wait for my turn?

Do not hijack my thread and make it about warez.
I currently have Basic C4D 9 that I paid for.
BodyPaint 2 that I paid for.
I am saving my pennies for bundle that I will pay for.
This thread is about a game I paid for that I can not play.
Since gamers use C4D to make games thought was a descent place to ask for help.

RorrKonn, there is no absolutely legal way to play the game directly off the hard drive since that would require the use of a patch which, as cookepuss has mentioned, is a violation of copyright laws (it's in your game EULA).
I have played the game you're talking about, and as far as I can tell, the disc-reading is very minimal (as it is with most games these days). I'm guessing your speed problems are coming from your outdated hardware.
As there is a strong legal gray area with regards to this topic, I am closing this thread as it is not in accordance with our policy regarding warez/copyright infringement on CGTalk.
