Hi folks. This is my latest model. Its not quite finished, still got to do the bling chain etc. Maybe also a little tweaking on the model and texture. You'll see a few changes from concept to final model. They were done for certain reasons but hopefully its came out better with the model.

The model is 1672 triangles. The texture is 1024*. I used max 6 and pscs.

All crits and comments welcome. Thanks.

All crits and comments welcome. Thanks.

Good work man . i think the model is very good . considering that its less than 2k. but i must say. if youre using that low amount of poly, it sugests that the model would have been for a fairly low end gaming machine. (PS2) maybe. so in that case i think your texture is WAY too big. But in any case your texture painting skills are good. maybe you should practise painitng on a 512 sheet?

Very cool. My only suggestions would be to add some tattoos on the arms and give the jersey a mesh texture.

Especially nice modelling Rampant, I would also like to see how this guy looks using 512 or lower but other than that good stuf.

if you're gonna use that many polys, then i think it would warrant making the shirt actually extrude off from the body. Right now the face and other parts are detailed, but the focus (the shirt) is just painted on his body. That really needs to pop-off to give it more depth and realism. You really just needa make a few cuts around the neck area and extrude out a little then.

MOTHERXXXXER! (sorry)

öhm...good one. For presentations or advertisments I paint my textures way too big. I scale them down for the game. It's just easier to paint big. If you scale it down, you should sharpen it before. Looks much better, and all the nice details are looking...well...more detailed :D
I think the attached shirt works fine. You would just see more lowpolyness if you extrude it.

Hey, thanks for the comments.

mufizal - I always paint textures at double the size, especially with a 512 texture. If its initially painted at 1024, I personally feel its possible to get better detail into the texture. I second florian's advice. When it gets reduced to 512, a bit of sharpening really picks out the detail. This is pretty much a portfolio piece though, so the actual texture size is not too big a deal. But I've attached a render of the model with a 512 instead of 1024 to see the difference. And I think you'll agree that it still retains most of the clarity. Thanks for the comments though.

StickFigure - Thanks. I totally agree with the tatto idea. I will definately be giving him some tatoos on the arms. As for the jersey, I did a lot of research on the internet for the shirt, and I did notice that the shirts the basketball players were wearing were a meshed fabric. But the best image I had was a photo of Snoop Dog, and his shirt was silky smooth and very shiny. I figured it was maybe more of a leisure version of the shirt, made without the mesh fabric. Either way, I think i'm gonna leave the mesh texture out. Thanks for the suggestions though.

CG- Gordon - Thanks. The attached image is of the model with a 512 texture. Cheers.

Neil - Not totally sure what you mean by 'that many polys'. I think 1672 triangles is pretty conservative in terms of polycount these days. I know what you're saying, but i've got to disagree. I don't think the shirt needs an extrusion at that area. I got to agree with Florian, I think it would actually make it look more low-poly. Thanks for making the suggestion though.

florian - Thanks for the comment. I also use that technique when painting textures. I also agree with the point you made about the shirt. Thanks.

Ok. - Here's the model with a 512 texture. (I didn't sharpen it either, so I could probably get it looking a bit better.

I agree with the post(s) that said give the jersey a mesh, and give him tattoos.

Remember, black guys (especially black gangsters) typically get all black ink tattoos. (I don't think their skin can show off colors because it's already dark.)

Also, he needs some accessories. No gangster can live without bling, or at least some rings.

He's a Lakers fan, and he's wearing a red bandanna... That doesn't make sense, since if he likes the Lakers and he's in a gang, most likely he's a Crip, so he would be wearing blue.

Give him some little healed scars... (Battle wounds.)

I've seen a lot of those types walking around with baby pacifiers, believe it or not. From what I know, when you're on X, and other drugs, it makes your teeth grind. This is why ravers have pacifiers. I'm guessing the 'gangster' kids I saw were doing the same thing.

Otherwise, having a pacifier in your mouth is pretty stupid looking. Stuff like that would get you shot by me, if I was in a gang too.

Edit: These 'gangster' types ALWAYS love to match. They can't go out of the house without matching. Some have shoes just to wear with a certain color of shirt. Make sure you match at least two items on him. If you don't wanna turn the bandanna blue, then try purple and yellow for the Lakers. They HAVE to match.

That's why they always say bizarre things like, "We keeps it clean, yo. Fresh and tight, everything matched."

He he, that's some great info there Matt. He's definately gonna get some tattoo's and bling style accessories when I get a chance to put them in there. I'll maybe also try out a mesh texture on the shirt since that's been flagged a couple times now.

Thanks for the gangland info also, I'm not very clued up on the L.A. colour codes, so I'll maybe try that bandana in blue and see how it looks. I love the pacifier idea, sounds really quirky, do they really do that? It would certainly give the character an unusual twist to put one in there-Maybe even attached to a gold neck chain or something.

Thanks again for the suggestions. Will definately try some of those out.

Cheers.

O.K.

First let me say that the model and the texture are looking very good. Matt was close, but I still live in " that " atmosphere and I will clarify. The pacifer thing was like 1992 and " gangsta's don't do that anymore. All " gangsta's ," black, italian, asian, etc., wear " bling " as a sign of status. Gold is outdated, Diamonds and Platinium are the minerals of chioce. Battle wounds are an excellant idea. Matching colors are good. This is done to show that inspite of his lack of money he is, he is still " so fresh and so clean," so go for a yellow or purple bandana. White tee shirts go under the " throw back jersy." Black skin can show off a color tattoo, but solid black ink tat's are better , * but appear blue on the skin *.( crosses, angel wings, praying hands. ) Church text style lettering of your " set " is the nickname of your neighborhood, block or project, which commonly goes vertically on your forearms. For example:

Forearm 1: Marcey
Forearm 2: Projects
