View Full Version : still: cartoony Nasa-launchsite
Khepri 08-14-2002, 01:51 PM aight, abit of a misleading thread title, but, well, I made this scene about half a year ago(for a schoolreport). but at that time, my computer wasn't able to render fast enough. so now, I opened the scene again and started to modifie lots of stuff, and adding lots more.
so, this is the result.
its meant to be cartoony, and well I think I have succeeded. the spacecraft is based on a "eggholder"(dunno if its the right word for it) .
I am not sure if I am going to change any major things about the scene. but if someone has a big complaint, I will think about it!:D
max 4.2 and renderd in Brazil R/S.
hope you like it

It's nice.
I guess..at least for me there's not a lot to critizise or comment on :)
Though, actually, maybe it's not the best composition-decision to have it beind the fence? It kinda obscures the form, making the image oddly unfocused.
Just a loose pondering that popped into my head, but maybe by having the fence broken by the egg-ships landing, the craft itself could be tilted over, telling a little story of a not-so-successful landing.
I dig the clouds, even though quite simple, they're still stylish. And it's a look that's pretty much reserved for 3D too, which I also like about them. Simple, cartooney, and unique to the 3d media.

Ok, ok I'm here. I think the image have a good style (semi-cartoonish). Only crit is for the clouds: are too rounded. The rest is ok. Good illumination.

Very gooooood image
The clouds are perfects .... I my opinion this image is a semi-cartoon style, and it does the job very well... No comments !!
Or maybe one.... Maybe I would change the ground texture to something less flatten...
congratulation !:buttrock:
I actually like the clouds as they are. The problem is that they are more cartoony than the rest. If you're after a cartoon look you should consider rounding off more edges - like on the girders - and exaggerate proportions. Also try to use more colors. The spacecraft is disappearing between all the white and it also makes the whole pic look too monochromatic. Use more colors in the shadows, like blue or purple. Skew everything a bit...don't leave anything perfectly aligned, especially the fencepoles and lamps.
Leave out the dof, it's very distracting and doesn't lead the eye at all right now. I also aggree with the others that the spacecraft is too obscured by the fence. If it's your focal point it makes no sense to hide it that way. You could make that portion of the fence an open gate so you can see it better.
Move the girder behind the craft a bit to the left and enlarge the hangar doors so that the darkness inside the hangar frames the spacecraft and thus gives it more contrast from the background. Also consider desaturating or even changing the color of those yellow thingies. They are more in-your-eyes than the spacecraft itself which is supposed to be the focal point.
Hope I make sense :)

yay thnx for the c&c's!
I have been looking at the scene, and, I desided to render 2 new versions, with slightly different camera angle and one with very strong DOF(over the top) and one without.
this is the one with dof! :D looks like a miniature.
why have one render when a slight variation of effects can change the whole look and feel of the scene!? heh!

I'll post the dof'less image lateron
cheers
Really nice picture you've made
I really like the overall mood in the scene!
The DOF version is better, but I think it's too strong... you loose a lot of detail and the foreground and background melts too much together.

Hi Bono! :) Glad to see that you made some changes!
With DOF it's looking miniature, like I said you earlier... but if that was your purpose then leave it as is...
The fence is perfect now, and the launchsite is seen enought...
Good work! But anyway I think that you should remove DOF.

those clouds kick ass ... how did u make them?

heh, yeah, thnx for the replies, I am currently rebuilding my website, and because this scene hogs recourses like a madman, I can only render it when I am not doing anything.
gonna render a DOF-less version though.
I have to delete alot of the wires in the fence(yeah.. modeled them) because you couldend see the site very good.
working on it now.:wip: :wip:
the clouds where created using a Pcloud particle system wich emits a sphere(not the native particle spheres).
piece of cake:D

I am rebuilding my website at the moment, and finally gonna be able to show some video(did the camera, editing, compositing and 3d for the vid), and animations.

To be honest, I didn't see the spaceship/rocket until you posted the ultra-blurred version. In my opinion, you should do it more like wiro suggested, more exaggeration and soft edges. As it is now, it's not very cartoony...

now the fence is perfect.. but i found something else.. look at the window on the control tower... it look kind of ord. like there isnt any. maby make them black with a stron reflection or maby try (something else i dunno).. else it a really nice pic. maby try making the spacerockets lines a bit more out of proportion. And i agree with bioni that the ground need a texture to.. maby you could make the ground under the rocket look like it had been burned.
But still the composing and modeling
cheers and keep up the good work
