What is that mean "Fairytaile Mashup" ?

andrewley
10-07-2004, 03:50 PM
Take two or more fairytale characters and combine them (mash them up) to create a new character

Vitriolic
10-07-2004, 04:03 PM
Oops, I took it as meaning 'take two fairytales and combine them'. Oh well :)

andrewley

Crackdown, hehe, funny idea
Vitriolic, good work, both of them:thumbsup:

Here is mine,
15-20 min pencil on paper for the lines
45min OpenCanvas1.1 for the background
45min photoshop for coloring the dwarf and the shoe
it was an experiment, mixing both programs, and I'm quite happy with the result

edit: I forgot to say that I used reference for this one, an old disney book I found gathering dust

I wanted to stay a little more sketchier this time but that was harder than I thought. It's very hard to get things right without diving into details.

The carpet seems to "hang" in the air, I know, I also know what I did wrong its just that it's 2 P.M. here and I need to get sleep.

It's sort of unfinished. Hope some of you still like it.

Photoshop CS w/ intros2 tablet for one hour.

Dopey dwarf (reference used for face) from snow white uses his oversized shirt to reach the bottom instead of that blonde girl with really long hair. :D Cant remember what that long blonde hair girl fairy tale is called... *shrugs* Enjoy! ;)

About 20 minutes pencil sketch, 3.5 hours wacom & ps
No more "coloring" pencil sketches. Takes too darn long! Fun topic, though.

IO -- I like it! Great job on the cobblestones.

Great topic! Some hilarous spins on familiar fairytale characters!
Here's mine: The Fairy God-Genie

http://almahir.com/images/drawings/2004_CDS124_fairytale_mashup.jpg

15 min pencil sketch, 45 min scan + Photoshop.
I hate using the mouse to color...

Edit: Moved my drawing and now i've relinked it. Sorry about that!

Old mother hubbard finds a new use for the duck with golden eggs.
Far too long in photoshop, and yet not enough time...

Gemcap: brilliant idea! I can just hear him humming as he skips along...

Hee hee, those last two cracked me up :D [edit: I was actually referring to Giant Red Riding Hood and the Fairy God-Genie, but the two that just got posted rock too :)] Great work everybody!

DreamMaster: Excellent colours, they set a very nice mood.

Garma: Great colour palette too, very 'arabian desert'. As for the carpet hanging in the air, maybe if you increased the effect of the wind it would give a stronger impression of motion.
(billowing cloak, leading edge of the carpet curling back, hat about to fall off, etc.) Still, it's a very effective image - wd!

didn't manage to put as many references to different tales as i would have liked...

http://digitalcraft.com.au/misc/sg124-fairytalemash.gif

Edit: OK...maybe i don't have a life...but i've always wanted to draw the dwarf that laid the golden egg :) + 15mins

the tortoise and the beanstalk...

might look like 10 mins but it took me 2 hours in painter :scream:

It was Hellboy who saved RedRidingHood And Grandma...

Holy cow, this one was a lot of fun!!!

3h, Painter, reference Hellboy comic for outfit.

http://www.empa.tv/marlon/sketch43.jpg

It's not really a meshup, but more like a meshup of two worlds.
That of the old and that of the new fairytail world...

(ok, my first idea was Hans as Gretel in front of the magic mirror :) )

Excellent entries everyone! There continues to be so many great ones, it becomes almost impossible to pick a favorite sketch.

iamintricate - That is the most clever and very well done! I love the fairy dust in the air!
art2 - I'm not so sure that Hellboy is technically considered a Fairy Tale, but excellent work!
ilikesoup - I love the look and especially the cow jumping over the moon in the background!
drawmonger - WOW! Really nice sketch - especially like the dwarf that laid the golden egg! :)
lightfreeze - go easier on yourself, Painter takes a while to learn
mahir - love the Fairy God Genie...and boy does he look angry!
gemcap - beautiful work! I bet the wolf doesn't give HIM a hard time!
IO - really good sketch, as for crits, her body looks a little flat, could use more form, the rabbit's nose is too flat, but other than that, REALLY nice work!
dreammaster, really nice work, Dopey is my favorite dwarf!
unraveled - that duck looks really scared!

sorry if I missed anyone.

Art2
10-08-2004, 02:43 PM
robin: you're probably right, but you could see it as a form of modern fairytail... :D
ok ok, I had this idea of Hellboy wacking the big bad wolf (I thought that would be cool, hehe)

art2 - is that the noob-eating wolf i see?

Art2
10-08-2004, 09:23 PM
What's a noob-eating wolf?... sorry, my understanding of some english words is sometimes a bit flawed :)

I know a noodle-eating wolf, speaks damn good japanese as well :D

edit: Do you mean a wolf that eats newbys?... in that case I consider it a great compliment
(I think... 'cos I still consider myself a major newby... ack! he'll be eating me then!)

gemcap
10-08-2004, 11:14 PM
Thanks for the feedback Robin, unraveled, vitriolic, its amazing how much a few positive comments help the struggle

in that vein:

Sampo, I really liked the style of your GingerHood

Art2, very nice look on the hellboy/wolf combo

Vitriolic, really liked both, the emperor for the laugh and the frog for the clean execution

obviously there are more that deserve comment, but those particularly caught my eye.

photoshop, wacom. about 40 mins.

art2 - oh, i thought you were the guy that did this: http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=56989

i guess not though. the resemblance between your wolf and the noob-eating wolf is uncanny, however.

Art2
10-09-2004, 08:22 AM
:scream: I'm first to admid that my wolf design is not that original... it's pretty straight forward
(except for the red head-gear :) ) , done by many people.
Now I come think of it: Hellboy, the Wolfs of Saint August. Just reread that story a while
back and maybe Mignola's wolf stayed in my unconsious... as the big bad wolf.

Hope you liked it anyway.
