View Full Version : Skin Shader with fur (images + .max file)
PiledotNET 10-07-2004, 11:52 AM Hi,
Some time ago I made a shader test that I would like to share with you.
The skin is a Raytrace material and the fur is particles from Particle Flow.

.MAX File - 3ds max 6 (http://www.redpixel.com.br/forumajuda/skintest.max)
Any tip to improve this shader please share :)
Cheers,

Looks good!. More like animal or something than human. Those hairs are nice and effective details. Thanks for share!

Tnks Sami!
I was looking you Alienware project and you have excelent exemples of fake SSS. I miss a lot SSS in my shader, you have a tip about it?
This was the best, really great job:

Yeah, I R & D'ed SSS techniques at the time of Alienware. Unfortunately I was a bit carried away from the rules of competition so these creatures never made it to final image.
For SSS, I usually use either carefully placed Ambient light(s) with relatively short Far attenuation or Falloff map in illumination slot with falloff type set to towards/away and direction set to object.
These are not 100% solutions and they might need tweaks in post or to be rendered in seperate pass but they do render very quickly and final result is almost totally controlable.
Here's a quick animation

And here's the .max-file (max 6)

Just do some reverse-engineering and you'll see...

Eternally grateful Sami!
It's a very nice tecnique and works very well in animation. At least the tests I did here where great. Take a look:

I will try to add this in the previous shader. Tnks again!

I'm glad I could help! These techniques can be replicated in one way or other in Cinema (has ambient light I recall), XSI (object based falloff) and maybe in other 3d apps too.

What do you think about this test:

It's a flash animation, and here's some frames:

For this I used a Falloff map in the Translucency channel of the Raytrace material.
