View Full Version : want to learn to model, can anyone suggest a project?
jtbullet 10-06-2004, 03:33 PM I need to really learn to model precision models, like the battleships I see other places on cgtalk. Can anyone suggest a project to get me started? I need something I can get good source material for, like an oil tanker or something like that, before i go straight to battleships.
Thanks guys!

You might try the old blueprint standby: http://www.suurland.com/They have some smaller, simpler boats you could use to get your feet wet(pun intended).

I'd suggest getting/assembling a plastic scale model of a battleship (a detailed one would help), and putting it right there on your desk next your monitor, so you can look at different parts of it and figure out how you could break it down into chunks that can be modeled on their own. If I recall correctly you're in the large-scale inkject prints biz, right? get some nice reference photos/drawings, print 'em large, and stick them up on the wall. nothing quite like large image references to work off...

I think it depends on how much experience you have modeling. If you're really new to C4D, you should pick lots of small projects -- stuff that's laying around your desk works well -- batteries, pens, coffee cups, lighters, staplers, desk lamps, books, computer mice, cell phones, etc etc etc. Work on one thing and practice doing it FAST. When you're finished, trash it (or save it... whatever), and do it again. Try to use different approaches each time to see what works best for you. Gradually work your way towards more complicated stuff, but always work out a few quick prototypes before you approach anything. . . Or not. Whatever works for you, man. :) Cheers.
EDIT: Sorry, just realized you're the forensics guy... You know all this stuff.
