Hi all,

Here is my first post, and very first Corel Painter drawing!!!

It was done in Painter 8, and I spent about 15 hours on it, from pencil on paper to this.
I used only Fine Airbrushes to get the feeling of those colourfull drawings you see on funfair attractions.

I am an Industrial Design student, and my knowledge about painting is limited, I studied some portrait and life drawing, some online tutorials and of course a lot of CGTalk surfing

It is a sort of cartoon, caricature version of a girl I know. I am going to give it to her on her birthday. I was inspired by another caricature on this forum (forgot the name), especially the shirt is more or less copied (but hey what a coincidence, the girl I painted actually has such a shirt!).

So, I would like some critique to improve the image before I give it. maybe about the colours and shading...I am also not very satisfied with the hair, teeth, ears and neck...

So, what do you think?!

Looking good Ralph :D I bet she's pretty in real life. I especially like the shading around her necklace. Since it's a caricature you can't help it, but she does look a bit manly, I think because of her musculair neck and maybe her jaws are a bit too broad :D

All together still a great piece :)

You've got an interesting style. Eyes, necklace and hair look very nice. Hope you don't mind a few critiques:

I'm not sure if it's intentional, but her head looks shaved on the right side of the picture -- if you're going for a realistic look, her ear should be closer to her face and her hair should start before her ear.

Cheekbones appear to be different sizes -- I'd suggest whittling down her right cheek a bit. It appears you've used gray to shade the nose and cheek. Instead, try shading with either a rouge or a darker copper color -- gray tends to give her a dirty looking face. Also, have another look at her nose -- it looks thick for a woman's nose and may be because of a misplaced highlight or too vertical of a line.

Lastly, her chin looks a bit too short and round. Given the shape of her face, I'd imagine it should be a bit longer and should taper a bit more.

Again, I don't know if you were aiming for a unique look with this portrait. If not, hope these notes prove helpful to you. :)

hey! (I do not like soup btw :) )

thanks for the critique!

The hair thing: the girl has a high hairline, and it is a caricaturistic drawing so I exaggerated it a little. But you're right about the fact that it should start before the ear, Isee it now.

in real life the girl has a really short round chin and a little broader, quite unusual nose so I think I'll keep it this way.,.

I really agree about the cheek: it is out of place, and i realized this when I had painted most of it already. how could i correct it? PS?

i think i'll make the neck a little smaller too...

oh and shading was done with a kind of purplish grey...try to fix that...

btw, i used layers for all the different parts (skin, shading, mouth, hair, shirt...) > is this ok?

and yeah she's very pretty! but next time i'll do a self portrait I think, then you'll see how ugly I am compared to her :D
