View Full Version : Another Trooper
neble 10-06-2004, 04:53 AM I just wanted to sketch a trooper, but wanted to try adding a exoskeleton for supporting heavier weapons etc. The suit would basically support itself, without having to follow the large Mech style. I was pretty happy at the overall form and emersed myself in sketching it. Then someone asked me if they would need so much bulk, bolts, rivvets etc, if this was supposed to be the future?
That got me thinking, maybe she was right. It would be sleeker, or at the very least plated to cover it all. What do you think?

mmm, i like detail, its always really cool, it gives that feeling of all those old school mech movies from the 80's and such (can't remember any titles). Although if you could blend a more smooth/fluid form with old school warrior "ruggedness", i think that would just be wicked cuz not many have the talent to do it, and from the looks of it you do...

ha. yeah I've thought about that arguement many times. Realistically, I think something in the future would definitely have a simpler design. Having lots of plates and bolts slapped together makes me think it is a dark age of technology... post apocalyptic maybe. It has a more foreign or "alien" feeling to it. not that thats bad in any way.
Man, I love the drawing though. I agree with what the guy above me said. the style reminds me of the 80's/early 90's japanese style of drawing futuristic machines. Like an old school video game. maybe thats why i like it. :)

80's 90's We're starting to show our age. :)
Thanks for the comments. I too like the old mech style. Heavy machines and heavy armor has always intrigued me, but I really think that realistically it's always going to get thinner. Hopefully never as thin as spandex..
After Metroid 2 goes gold I hope have a little time to do some revisions. Might do a little plateing and making him look sleeker, but not too. Honestly wouldn't the support behind the arm be the first place you would shoot. :)

that style looks like a 80's comic book, when it was cool to have a bunch of unnessecary detail for decoration. look at the evolution of the car: sleeker, smoother, etc. anything decorative is on purpose. this looks like it was built from spare parts, which is cool, but it needs more duct tape :)

This time I went for a little more of a sleek look. I kept the exoskeleton but minimized it by keeping it close to the body. Also, still went for the left clawed hand but tried to explain a little better how it would slide further out when clamping. I'm starting to second guess this style of claw. Might need some further thinking. No duct tape :)

Kraal- Ha ha. Let's hope it never comes down to that. Still when it comes to movies and games I always seem to lean towards the more apocalyptic scenerio.
Asura- Not a bad idea. I'm going to try updating these two images very soon.
