View Full Version : Andy Hayes new shader
popol 10-05-2004, 04:28 PM Andy Hayes has a released a new shader, "Glimmer", wich "mimics the glare, halo and corona of intense light through the human eye".
It's a very good shader and works fine under xsi, any possibility to have that under maya?

Definitely could be done in post, but it would be cool to mess around with anyway. I emailed Andy and he said he would be trying to put together a Maya versoin soon. It's not compiled in a .dll format so I'm probably thinking it's just a Phenomenon shader.

i was thinking the same thing. its cool, but youd save a ton of render time just doing it in post. theres a ton of ways to get that effect-even without a plugin. cool none the less.

But I think you'd usually have to render a separate pass to get a good effect, since trying to grab this kind of 'glimmer-peaks' of light out of 255 levels of grey would usually fail. Internally I'm sure MR deals with a wider dynamic range to do it.

well yes and no, you can pull it off with the right techniques in after effects. i have done it before with similar results, no one would know the wiser...
hey steven. how are you...its dave. i met you at the gnomon workshop that one night when we all went to cat and fiddle...

This shader doesnt need a convertion. Andy just has to release it as a .dll.
You should ask him to do it.

I've made some headway with this type of technique, which, not identical to the 'glimmer' plug, has the same type of effect.

Well...since Andy hasnt released a version for Maya I´ve done it.
I extracted the .dll and wrote the necessary maya files.
Its at the bottom of my MR shaders page.
Usage: Connect the shader to the camera as a MR output shader.
Its a bit slow so start experimenting at a lower resolution.
Enjoy! :)

Here´s one more coming...;)
I also made the Maya files for Andys fbm texture shader while I was at it...
Usage: It outputs a scalar value so connect it to a ramps vCoord or to Blender of my JS_BlendColors.
Enjoy! :)
