For the martial arts web page, I see two basic problems--too much white space, and the tiger icon doesn't have anything to do with the bonsai that shares its space. My suggestion is to take whichever symbol is more closely related to the school (either the tiger or the bonsai) and place an opaque icon at the bottom of the navigation bar at left. If you can get photos of students in test or classroom situations, put thumbnails under the text that describes the belt tests.

As for Josh Bolduc's page, there's just no visual impact and that's bad for an artist's site. Use more of Josh's work to fill that enormous white space--either as a collage, or for thumbnails. Line thumbnails of his work along each menu option on the side navigation bar.

Best advice is to check out sites for similar businesses and see what grabs your attention. I'm not one for stealing ideas, but a few good ideas can get your creative juices flowing. Good luck!

I have only two crits for you. But one of them is really important for you to develop.
First, don't use seriffed fonts when your using outputs of 72 dpi's. Its awfull. It's harder to read, not everyone has them on their computer and compositions gets more complicated, especially when your using it in navigation.
Second, I can notice that you put effort on your work. But your too stuck on given formulas. Advice: get mad. Try different things, allways. :D

But you have talent, m8.
You'll be learning untill the rest of your life.
Love.
