View Full Version : Mental ray headaches
Gamoron 08-13-2002, 08:53 PM I've been working with mental ray and it's not doing what it should. I need tuts that weren't shipped by discreet. Seems that when I try to use global illumination, nothing happens until I turn on Final Gather and then Lights don't seem to have any effect!
HELP!

I think the problem just gets to bright. I try toning the lights and lowering the amount of Gathering, and still bright. Anybody know?

did you work with intensity, energy, photons and decay/fallof parameters of light.
Turn energy way down. It defaults to 1000, and I usually have to turn it down to 5 or 10 with final gather on. Sometimes even lower, depending on the scene and lights.
To make it easier, turn photons way down (like 500 or 1000), and set the final gather samples to a very low level (150-250). You'll get huge splashes of light, but you can sort of see what the average light level would be. Adjust energy on the lights until you think the light level would be right, then crank up the photons to ~100,000 (save the photon map so rerenders will be faster) and turn up the final gather samples till it looks good.
