Ok iv been working pretty hard on my head model and im about ready to smooth it down. The thing im worried about is all the loose vertices that are hanging about. There are not many of them but i cant find a way to get rid of them. Is it really a need to get rid of them? Another thing is when i smooth the model, it shows some seams, so i tried doing a cleanup before smoothing and that seemed to fix the problem, except then i have alot of irregular geometry with more or less than 4 sides. i guess my question is what is the best way to fix these things.

I'm in a similar boat.

If the model is really too irregular (hard to judge without wireframe pics), scrap it. If you definately want to fix it...

Just delete loose vertices. If they're not integral to a poly, they can be deleted. A quick and rough way to do this is to select all the vertices on your model and just hit delete. The ones that are needed will stay.

Soften all your edges normals; maybe that's the "seam" problem you mentioned.

As for cleaning up the topology, the "select contiguous edges" tool is your best friend.
