great work! That's a perfect cover picture.
Really good lightning. It's interesting how you've put the emphasis on the monster's mouth (forsaken devil") with the red/orange light and how that's in contrast with the blue colors in the rest of the image. Really gives me that cold winterly feeling. I like the kind of dof effect you did on the snow flakes with the different sizes.

Awesome image.

The strong diagonal composition brings the viewers eye to the the creature and the two guys down by it's feet, In fact, you've framed them with the creatures light whip and his wing.

I think the guy with the hammer is completely lost. He blends into the background in value and color and is almost invisible. I would change his color, a bit more warms in his skin, and amp up the lightning from his hammer. I would also make him perpendicular to the lines of the whip and wing so he stands apart in the composition.

talking bout personal style

you got me awed
 :buttrock:

i realy love the classic clash between the dragon and the night feeling in it ..
the light just adds more to the entire feeling of it ..

some point i personaly love ..
the hint of light coming out of the dragons mouth like it's about to have a BBQ .
A dragon with a sword ! (and a whip ? ) who ever though that ^^

i'd realy have to say nice work !

Awesome image.
I think the guy with the hammer is completely lost.

I agree with cloudmover on that.
But instead of toning him up, colourwise and lightwise, my opinion would be to totally get him out of the way, because as he is composed over the monster he interferes with the whole motion and movement of the fight. He appears to be stuck on top of the monster. Sorry if I seem rude, but this sort of reminds me of the days I used to do daily political cartoons, and editors, with no idea of composition and framing, used to suggest, various ideas, filling up the frame with all sorts of people objects etc.
To be able to pass a message the image must be bold and clear.
Don't clutter your precious space with things, if they do'nt add to the message you want to give.
If you need to keep him in and the comp was landscape you could move him either in the first plane or on the side.
Apart from that, the generall composition, colours, and atmosphere achieved are remarkable.
Kudos

Congrats, very nice image. Several things I like about it:

Motion blurred snow, gives it depth
Smooth, cold colors, contrasted by the warm colors of the demon
Your stylistic strokes

Great work... I love the composition and the feelinlg of winter storm.
I agree with cloudmover.net on pretty much everything he said about composition. The guy with the hammer is invisible.

Other than that I like it! Two thumbs up from me:thumbsup:

That's awesome! I gotta tell ya. I'm really enjoying the diversity of the front page artwork theese days. Lots of 2D. Very good. Although I can't draw one bit, but I still enjoy seeing a great drawing.

Gorgeous work.

My only critique would be that for the cover of a book it is very, very busy and takes a second to soak up what is going on with the smaller characters. This is mainly because they are very dark and don't catch the eye.

Otherwise I love the painting though.

It's quite unoriginal of me to say that it would do great as a Might & Magic Cover, but that's really the first thing I thought when I saw the picture ;)

great job, I like it a lot!

Hey guys,

before criting the hammer person in the background you might want a couple peices of info. I believe this person is frozen/trapped inside a giant crystal. If I recall the story correctly a demon trapped one of Drizzt's friends and was torturing him for a long period of time (4-5years?). Drizzt was under the impression it was his father and came to rescue him with his powerful freinds. One the battle was won on the ice island, he found out it was actually his old buddy Wulgar who was killed and then captured in hades by the demon. Anyways the story is quite involved and that is the short version. Correct me if I'm wrong but :

1: The battle is taking place on an Ice Isle in a frozen wastland, inside a giant tower of crystal. Or perhaps it was a cave.
2: The barbarian with the hammer is frozen/trapped inside a giant crystal. The demon is using him as a taunt (come and get me). Drizzts killed the demon in an earlier book and it wants revenge.
3: Drizzt think his father is inside the crystal until the very end and is surprised when his buddy Wulgar comes out. So he could not tell by looking who it was. Though the hammer would have made it obvious.

So even though i first thought the same thing, I now kinda agree with his choice of colors and shading, etc.

-Deathcricket-

P.S. I have not read the book in a couple years forgive me if I'm a little off. :)

:Edit

P.P.S. Forgot 2 things 1. Excellent painting! and (2) if anybody reads, "The Chronicles of Drizzt" by R.A. Salvatore are probably the best books I have ever read. This painting has actually inspired me to read them again since I realize my memory is a little fuzzy.

I would change his color, a bit more warms in his skin, and amp up the lightning from his hammer. I would also make him perpendicular to the lines of the whip and wing so he stands apart in the composition.Hrmm, i dunno i think it works the way it is. Looking at the painting i see an intense fight with 2 'men' struggling against a terrific monster that's obviously more than a match for them. And just when the moment turns really dark and it seems the Dragon has won, there arises a saviour from the depths of who knows where. So we have this amazing fight in progress and everyones attention is totally into the fight. No one has the slightest clue that this barbarian has arisen and is coming to turn the tide of the battle.

That's just what i got from looking at the painting. Then i read the description and surely they are the same, no? So if the artists idea was conveyed accurately to me purely from sight, wouldn't you say his choice of layout/colors/etc.. was just?

BTW can we get a larger version of the painting? I would love this for my desktop :)
Oh and almost forgot to say, amazing work Guo.

the blue guy in the background is wulfgar the barbarian, and he is trapped in ice :) thats why he is blue! and the dragon is a balor not a dragon ;) and he is the one who trapped the wulfgar there (wulfgar was tortured in hell for 9 years by the balor) and now drizzt (the dark-elf with scimitars in the pic) and bruenor the dwarf is here to rescue him....though they thought wulfgar was dead 9 years ago...
When wulfgar sees his old friends fighting the demon his old strength returns, and he blasts through the wall of ice...and together they vanquish the demon....

Uhm, i think the balor looks realy great, but it doesn't look like a balor :) a balor looks more like a mix between dog and monkey or something...unless i'm mistaken...
AWASOME pic anyways :D

Hehe, Wulfgar is also helped out because his hammer, Aegis Fang, returns to him. And Wulfgar wasn't killed in the crystal tower, he was killed when he brought down a cavern fighting a yochol. I'm such a Forgotten Realms nerd :scream:. Great job on the painting, although I had envisioned Wulfgar being a bit bigger and the hammer being a bit longer w/ a smaller head, but that's just opinion. The way you've done Ertuu is quite nice though, very sinister. :D

YEah good rendering. The posing of the characters is a little awkward though. It doesn't have the dynamics of a raging battle...

Yes, it is a outstanding work! The lighing and the characters are good, however you can touch a little bit the composition and think about the character whit the hammer,he isn't visible at all, maybe if you change the colors hi will make attenison:) Sorry for my English

great piece, its really awesome.

um, just a bit of constructive criticism on the composition:
the way theyr'e fighting, we can't see drizzit's or bruenor's faces, we see the main characters from the back. There's a lot of great action, but i don't think publishers would like the main characters to not be seen clearly. it makes the dragon / demon look like its the main focus.

That's very nice work!

But only thing that disturbs me is Vulgar's right arm's pose. I'm sure it's anatomically right, but looks broken and a bit ugly in aesthetically way. Anyway, the works is great.

Keep good working

wulfgar wasn't trapped in hades, that's another sub-plane...it was one of the 9 hells anyways i think :)

and he was tortured 9 years, not 4-5

what happens next?
well bruenor carries aegis-fang, the weapon he forged for wulfgar as a token of deep friendship.
Aegis-fang has the ability to magicly return to it's possessors hand, and the owner is wulfgar of course :)
so it appears in wulfgars hand, and wulfgar smashes his ice prison to pieces, and joins the fight.

Errtu the demon has many magical powers, and a electric huge great sword, his body is constantly under fire, and uses this to his advantage, by melting the ice walls in the cave, and freezing it again, trapping the heros' feet in the ice, making it hard for them to move around.
He also uses his thunderblade to electrify those standing in the water...then he *blinks* round the cave (teleporting) while laughing manacingly... MUHAHAHAHAHHA....

anyways, i don't remember the fighting in detail, but somehow errtu get's bannished back to hell, while he is being unsummoned, he tries grabbing drizzt and bring him along to hell, But Wulfgar (as a barbarian) possesses strength beyond normal men, and even more for being enraged beyond comprehension....but who wouldn't after being tortured in hell for 9 years, and finaly sees a path of escape? and seeing his friend suffer under his previous torturer...

anyways, Errtu tried grabbing drizzt to pull him along, but Wulfgar grabs Errtu's hand, and holds it back...of course Errtu is shocked beyond reasoning...because how can the strength of a mortal man exceed that of his own? a mighty balor? (sort of like a balrog in LotR)

So Errtu get's bannished, and everyone rejoyces!
except Wulfgar who has lost his empathy, fighter spirit during the torture, and how can he be sure he is actually free? the balor tricked him many times before, parhapps this is just a trick to give him hope back, then crush it again.
Drizzt and the others do everything in their power to help wulfgar back on track. But they fail.
Wulfgar leaves the party under secrecy, to travel alone, and find his own path, while drizzt, bruenor, and cattie-bire can only pray that they will see him again, in his former glory.

OK, artwork is good and the elements are balanced and well placed, but if the title is Awakening of the Hammer then artwork is a little off. Don't know anything about the story, but so far this should be called Awakening of the Monster (what ever it is). My point is that the hammer should be where the monster is.:wise:

...maybe if you put the monster and everything else on the background and the guy with the Hammer on first plane (showing his back) you can save the work you've done so far :)

I do'nt think its a good idea to use it for a Drizzt novel's cover, just cause its totally SPOILER... In fact, I saw this image while I was reading the book, and I wish I didnt do it...

Anyway, I like the picture, but I think wulfgar should be BIGGER, and so should be Aagis-Fang, his hammer.
