I very rarely gasp when I see a piece of artwork.

I did when I saw these illustrations.

The detail in both of these pieces has left me absolutely speechless.
I'd give you ten stars if I could.

Love the second, the first is also great, but I prefer the second, for it's sense of actually being up in the air and the use of various shades of only a few clours....I could go on...!

great stuff.

Right off the bat I'm totally impressed with these images. My hat is off to you especially for the fact that everything is there, I'm happy to see your dedication to details.

First Image:

My comment on the first one is that the cowgirl isn't needed for this image. It actually seemed to be the only thing that didn't fit in this image. Also since it's so far back in the image it looked like it was a girl floating in the air then a sign on a building. But I'm just nitpicking here. It's a great image!

Second Image:

The second image isn't as strong as the first one. Do more of what you're doing with the first one. The second image doesn't have the impact or atmosphere that the first one does. The perspective is a bit flat also. The engines on the left aren't in the right perspective and it doesn't read that she's on a ship or barge to me.

Anyway, I don't know how much of crit you want so I'll stop here. Go for that first look, it's working for you and I feel you're onto something there.

Great job!

Awesome images. I prefer the first one, but it's mostly a matter of personal taste. It has a great sense of scale, and the lighting and amount of detail you put into it is simply stunning.

Very cool environment... It feels as if it's a still from an animation, with the girl and her guide walking over the bridge. I get the feeling there's a story behind it all, as if you've captured a snapshot out of her journey. The lighting is superb, as is the atmosphere. Makes me want to create a 3d version just to see it moving :)

Oh man the first image is really good... lots of detail.. one thing though why did you bother to block it up in 3D in the first place? Just for compositional purposes? Coz with your skills I think you can easily do without it and skip a step

First off, awesome images.

However, I'll probably be slammed for this, but I have to say it. The first image, the woman with her guide. To me, it just totally doesn't fit the image. Here they are in the middle of a highly technological environment and he's walking with a light hanging off the end of a stick. My eyes are drawn to that and it just doesn't look right. Maybe if it was a robot or something, possibly it might work better. I mean, in that society that's not going to be a human's job.

Not a slam, but I'm going to wager a guess here that you probably don't get to Asia very often. One of things, probably the first things most westerners notice when they get to an Asian country that has been industrialized, is that old and new tend to exist side by side. I always marveled how standing in the courtyard of Kyeongbok Palace in Seoul one can see a huge jumbo-tron television affixed to a nearby sky-scraper.

The old way of life in Asia doesn't dissappear easily... and I think the image does a good job of highlighting that.

I was thinking about try it for some of my drawings.

the block test on the first post shows you exactly how planing something simple in the begining lets you take it to extream detail later on...

I would suggest to any student building their own sets pay attention to this,

good stuff

Insane amount of detail, great color scheme and nice comic style feeling. I agree that the only detail not 5 stars is the cowgirl neon. It seems to be floating. Other than that, is a top executed image.

I like the new concept Pene. I remember the second image and it's somewhat old compared to the new one but I can immeadiately see the improvement you've made over the last year or so. The new image reminds me of a little bit of Blade Runner and a little bit of Katsuhiro Otomo.

Excellent work and intelligent work method. Wonderful website by the way. I have to agree that maybe the cowgirl does not fit. However I believe you could add more signs that are equally outrageous and it might help push the sinful, consumer feel that cowgirl conveys. Though that may be more appropriate for another painting all together. Cheers!

Great work I really like the concept. The girl that is the neon sign is a little distracting though. She looks out of place and I thought that she was jumping over the buildings.

Yodimus
10-06-2004, 11:57 PM
I love that sign in the distant background. The one that looks like it's a cross between McDonalds and Enron. I cracked up at that.

Now, I was originally going to be more critical with the lighting, which is beutiful by the way. But specifically the dwarf's lantern. I like the tiny spots of green you have around the scene, and i think it would have been a better idea to introduce this color into the lantern's light. As it is, my eye is not as easily drawn away from your wonderfully detailed scene toward the true subjects, because the red light falls into the background.

Of course, i just assumed you could simply tell the light to shine green instead of red, and then rerender. Then i realized this wasn't 3d. Doh.

I still think the lantern should be green, but i'm currently too awestruck to have a problem with it.
Amazing work man.

well i like the secound painting allot better then the first. the secound one has a good composision and i just all around better to look at. the first is soo over crowded, and no focal point that its just confusing. if you coudl change the camera angle or somthing, try getign in closer to the dude on the bridge showing city behind, or just cut some of the lights on the side. other then that looks good dude. -M

Wow, you have some amazing pieces here. But I feel that your first piece is stronger than your second only because I feel that it looks more complete, but all in all, I like both for its mood and colors. I agree with Kevin about the cowgirl in the background it does look like it's floating. Imho, I feel that it will work better placed somewhere in the midground or extreme foreground... But otherwise keep up the great work and keep on posting.

I know this was created awhile back, but looking at it now again, it never gets old. These illustrations were simply beautiful. Have you elaborated on the work since its creation? I love the reddish-pink feel to the backdrop, it leads to a subtile but still beauty to the character. This i'm sure is what you were wanting to achieve. Great job.

Both these images completely blew me away! Beautiful work! Breathtaking! I love environmental depth and things feeling so huge.

My crits:

First image: I agree with kevincu... the cowgirl is *slightly* outta place... But perhaps if it were slightly toned down in brightness it wouldn't matter, or if the other signs similar in nature were made slightly more obvious. Or if it had some of the red haze applied to it to push it back a bit. :)

Second image: Also agreeing with kevin here... this one looks like it was done more quickly or at a lower res... it has more of an "oil painting" feel, but that's not necessarily a crit... the perspective on the engines does feel slightly off. and also the engines were the only thing that led me to think she was on a ship. Other than that, I don't get the impression that she's walking, or moving at all (don't know what you were shooting for in that arena). I love the reflections on the floor, but the girl and the fence have no reflections (again, dunno what was deliberate). And another nit-pick: the pillar closest to us seems to be missing a curly cue (the ornaments up by the ceiling)! :hmm:

Overall, very stunning and impressive work! This is WAY above my level but I thought I'd offer crits anyway :)

Amazing detail! Beautiful!

EDIT: forgot to say: also, i think if you swap that old man guide with the flying robot guide, things might fit better. heh!

Crap I didn't realize this thing was 5 pages long. i only read the first page before posting :argh:

Thanks for showing

For the second image, the distraction and perspective issues could be easilly corrected by simply cropping the image. Crop the left side to where the pillar starts and the right to where the robot begins. You can try this by playing with the edges on your browser. I would also blur the area on the front pillar thus creating better dof. I really like the traditional/high-tech feeling on the image ;)

The first image is absolutely stunning. Wonderful detail that I could not stop looking at it.
The second one varies in quality and detail, the engines being the one thing that lets it down. Excellent work all the same.

Amazing artwork, kind of a mix between blade runner's city and Coruscant -> excellent work! The mass of details is really impressive, and I really love the second painting with this feeling of floating somewhere, and the peaceful young girl - as if she has just moved - gives life to the entire illustration!
Great Work!!

Pene - Nice job. I'm sure this is obvious, but it looks very 'Blade Runneresque' - That also means it's very excellent! I also like the little escourt guy looks like he might be carrying a light sabre....The building detail and lighting are awesome and remind a bit of "Aeon Flux" another very excellent thing!

Very Nice!
