Simple question about *.icons

you dont mean the icons that maya uses for certain tools on the shelf do you?

.icons files are created by Maya 3.0 and earlier. They are
files that contain a cache of swatches from the Hypeshade and
Multilister, so that the next time you open your scene file,
it will display faster because Maya does not have to re-render
those swatches.

in Maya 4.0 and later, these files have been renamed
to have a .swatches extension and have been moved into
the .mayaSwatches directory.
