View Full Version : Multirender-NET-Separate passes..Confused..

I feel very confused.. Done a lot of regular NET-renders, but now I'd like to render separate passes (depth, specular etc) using NET. And I'm stuck!

Normaly I "Save Project" and choose the admin folder on the server. I then start the renders via my browser. No problems.
This involves -not- specifying a Save- path, since NET takes care of that by putting the result in the result folder.

Problem A:
When saving a aec-file using NET, I have to manualy choose a location for it. But when I press the Save-button (by the aec option) it demands a save-path set in the regular Save option. For me that makes a Catch22 situation...
To solve that I first "Save Project" with no path to the admin-folder.
Then I set a regular save path so I can save the aec-file into the now existing result-folder.

Problem B:
What do I do with the Multirenders (the separate passes)? I can't for the life of me get them to be rendered using NET! I must be missing something here, but don't get it....

Hm, I got it working, but it is complicated I think.
-1 "Save Project" with no save paths. This way a "result" folder is created on the server.
-2 Specify a Save path to the result folder so I can save the aec file.
-- I then erase this path--.(Edit, this isn't needed, the path can remain)
-3 Specify a save path for the separate passes to the result folder.
-4 Press AppleS to save the scene, as is.

Now it works, but it is very easy to miss any step here...
Especialy if there are many projects to line up.

aaaaaaand..the struggle goes on! Still using NET.
Now I have set the lights to be rendered separate...
They are rendered nicely into the result, but....
When opening the aec file, there are two comps for the lights, Right so.
However, the files are reported as missing in these comps!
I have to manualy replace each file.
In a very simple scene with two lights that isn't impossible, only boring.
In a regular production it would be very hard thou.

Does anybody encounter this problem?
Or know how I can avoid it?

Cheers

l haven't got an answer to your problem Lennart, but have had a simular problem doing a multipass render in the psd. format and having AE not seeing the files be it lights or any of the other separations that you get belive it or not. So l don't know if it is an After Effects problem because l never tried to fixed it.

P.S.Thanks for the info on the doing the multipass rendering using the NET function, handy to know.

Don't specify a path. Just type a name in the box and the file will be saved to the results folder. Also, the filename in the image and the multipass boxes can't be the same even though the saved files would be named differently.

If ae doesn't see the files, move the files into the same folder with the ae project and reopen the ae file. ae always checks the folder that the project is in for source files.

hope this helps

I've been doing a ton of multipass net renders with Ae project files and it works perfectly... After effects see all the passes... Here's what I do...

First I make sure save multipass is on with the relevant passes...no path is set yet...
Then use the save project command to save the project folder...
Then set the multipass save path to the results folder that netrender creates...
Then set the save path for the render using the same results folder...
Then manually save the AE project to the same results folder...
Then save the project and close it... Render

I've done over 50 renders this way recently and all of the passes show up correctly... I havent had any problems at all using C49 and AE 6.5 on XP.
