can't see a whole lot of detail, but it looks very nice. that goes for the wood, too.

maybe this will be better

Hmm, this looks remarkably familiar. Seems like I saw something just like this on the softimage site or the mental images site a few years back. There was even an animation that went with it. I'll see if I can dig that stuff up. It'd be interesting to compare the two just to see how far rendering technology has come. Great model!! Can you post a wire frame? I'm curious about how you did the hair. Partcles or some hair plugin?

Hi Anticz

i'd love to see that softimage spider.
i used Sasquatch for the hair - its a hair plugin for Lightwave.

here is the wire

Yeah, I looked for it a little but I'm sure it's archived on a cd somewhere by now. I'm so curious now. I remeber being stunned at the time because mental ray was so much more advanced than everything else. By todays standards, with all the new renders out there, and built in GI and really good AA in almost every app it probably just falls apart. Anyone else know the spider I'm talking about? Sorry about the off topic rant. I'm just reminissing about the old days when raytracing was only done on super computers that cost a million dollars and a seat of Soft was 40K. Great image! The wood is bang on. Thanks for the ride down memory lane.

now you got me curious :bounce:

here another render with a different wood.
i think it works better

anticz: I think you are talking about the Glassworks spider add for.. something with the spider running over its web, and then jumping down(with a spiderwebbing safety rope), and in the background someone doing the same with a bungyjump rope.

I believe it was an insurance company add and they made their own fur shader.

really cewl stuff!

as for this spider: really cewl also! I alway wondered how a spider would be animated, because of its feet/legs all around...

your gonna animate him???

keep it up!

just asked a griend about that softimage spider.he remembers an animation they did of a spider walking on a branch or a piece of wood.it was done a few years back.unfortunatly he doesn't have that either.

Khepri,
No, I don't it was glass works. This was like 6 or 7 years ago.

tal flint,
There's a spider animation in the animate section of my site I did a couple years back

anticz.com (http://www.anticz.com)

Thought you might be interested since you're getting ready to animate this guy. Can't wait to see it move around!

antics - that was a great animation you did with that spider.loved it.

i do have a question - i watched some spider vids i found and i saw that the leg movement order for one side is - first, third, second, forth.

what i couldn't see is how it workes together with the other 4 legs - how do they combine - is it at the same order or is the order shifted - second, forth, third, first ?

It works like a tripod. There's always three pionts of contact (one on one side, two on the other). Different spiders locomote in different patterns but the tripod rule works for all of them (and looks natural). Hope that made sense.

tal flint
08-13-2002, 10:51 PM
that i saw (the tripod thing)
what i couldn't find out is the order - first leg on one side than the second on the other than third on the first side etc' or what ?

what was the order that you worked with ?

Don't recall off the top of my head. If I have time I'll draw a diagram. I think it was every othe leg from front to back (ie forward legs moved just slightly ahead of trailing legs).

tal flint

thanks

a diagram would be great

Great looking spider, the background texture is just a bit overpowering I think and doesn't provide much contrast to make the spider standout. Perhaps if it was a bit darker.

Nice one.

hi all

i've finished the rig today and about to start animating the spider.
before i do i wanted to make the backgroung a bit more realistic and interesting.

i'm posting 2 pics and i want some opinions about the composition and textures.
the composition is more importent right now becouse i'm still working on the textures.

here is the first pic

AAGHHH I hate spiders.....

If I find one of those in my house Ill be at least 10 mts from it

Great work, but if your main character in the scene is the spider try to give it more contrast vs the background... :)

I like the second one.....the scene is very cool of that one with the leaves....but the spider legs looks blurred(or dof) remove that...of fix it and it's very cool...

waiting for the animation...

first animation test.
there is a sliding problem after it stops, but it's fixed already.

Looks like you've got a lot of sliding going on everywhere. Are you using IK to drive the legs? You're gonna have to nail the feet down to sell this.

tal flint
08-23-2002, 06:20 AM
looks like it doesn't work also.
maybe this one will

tal flint
08-23-2002, 06:25 AM
Hi anticz
yes i'm using IK for the legs - i fixed that sliding at the end and rendering a new test now.
i'm also having a hard time trying to make life easy bay using some expressions to make the legs automaticaly follow the body using expressions in messiah so the legs will always be locked and won't slide

tal

anticz
08-23-2002, 06:40 AM
Try doing the exact opposite. Drive the body with the IK goals or end effectors (Whatever they're called in messiah). That way you can pin the legs to the goals and forget about the body. Expession logic will be something like this (don't know the syntax for messiah),

Body X position = (Leg1IKgoal.xposition + Leg2IKgoal.xposition + Leg3IKgoal.xposition + Leg4IKgoal.xposition + Leg5IKgoal.xposition + Leg6IKgoal.xposition + Leg7IKgoal.xposition + Leg8IKgoal.xposition) /8

Body Y (or Z, whatever your ground plane axis is) position = (Leg1IKgoal.yposition + Leg2IKgoal.yposition + Leg3IKgoal.yposition + Leg4IKgoal.yposition + Leg5IKgoal.yposition + Leg6IKgoal.yposition + Leg7IKgoal.yposition + Leg8IKgoal.yposition) /8

Or better yet, just put a position constaint on the body and use the IK goals to keep it centered between them. Then go back and animate a second layer on the body after you have the feet worked out. Point being. the body shouldn't drive the feet or it'll be a nightmare keeping them pinned in one spot. Hope that made sense.

tal flint
08-23-2002, 07:36 AM
it makes sense thanks.
i'll try that.

what i was working on is moving the body and than the legs ik_goals move with it but there is a delay in time for each leg to keep them ordered.

tal

anticz
08-23-2002, 07:45 AM
There's alot of extra stuff that goes along with what you were trying, for instance, how would you rotate the body and keep the feet pinned and oriented correctly? How could you make the spider walk over obsticles?

tal flint
08-23-2002, 08:32 AM
i didn't figure out the rotation problem but for walking over stuff i have a sliders set to override the automation of the legs and allow them to go up and down.

what i'm doing is trying to convert the rigs i used for biped characters to this one - alot needs to be changed but if it works it will be very easy to animate.

how did you solve all this?

tal

anticz
08-23-2002, 08:33 AM
Already told ya how I solved it. See above (legs drive body)

i'm sorry about that
geocities has closed ut temporarly due to heavy trafic.

i was hoping it will last untill i finish my website, but looks like i't will have to wait a few more days.

you can try and D/L it later during the day, maybe they'll reopen it.

Yes i 've got it !
It' s already cool as it is , untextured.
A nice point to the cam focus.
And the acting of the spider is well observed (or imaginated?)

A few comments if you wish.
The spider should walk in a less straight way.You should add subtles variations in the path to put more life in your scene.
The abdomen of the spider should move in some ways 'coz it looks a little rigid for now.

But good work and anyway , the textured version will be great.
Keep posting

anticz: i went to your site. i really like the illustration of the woman w/ the wet dress. it really looks like the fabirc has obsorbed fluid and it's sticking to her skin. great! did you draw it and then scan it into photoshop to paint it?

The animation looks great perhps it needs to be in a new thread also when you post up some finished work of the spider animation or it might get lost.

The only comment I would have possibly is that the spiders motion is a little slow and the camera seams to zoom in too soon once the spider stops.
