she said max does not have a diffuse parameter in material editor.
it has. you need to select anistropic highlight shader. now you will get diffuse parameter. and if you dont want anistropicity just set it to 0.

Actually, in Part 4, Max's diffusion abilities are discussed at some length :)

Perhaps I should update it... I only discovered after writing Part 1 that Max supported real diffusion :) oops.... hehehehe
