View Full Version : Modelling clothes onto characters???
Kameel 09-28-2004, 11:46 PM What's up everybody?
I wanted to know the best way to model a basketball player in wings? I'm fairly new to the program (Max usedr). I love the modelling features in wings, over every other package. The way you can select a face, and add segments, instead of having to cut them. Anyway, I'm trying to model Jordan, but I'm trying to get a few questions out of the way.......

clothes are going to be tough. typically stuff like a jersey or fine cloth is done as a plane, however, wings doesn't do planes. so if you do it, you will have to make really thin boxes. its a pain because you have to work with 2 sets of gemoetry, i.e. inside and utside of cloth.
you may want to save that for max, that's what I'm doing :)

u can create planes in wings and alpha them: just extrude the face under the edge where you want a plane and delete all sides but the one that is going to be a plane . THEN switch to verts and reconnect the verts that need it, or create a new box and do the same.

Hi there,
I have been to this site often, but this is my first post.
This is the method that I usually use to make clothes for my characters that I model in wings3d. First, take the original character model and DUPLICATE it. The duplicate mesh will become the actual item of clothing. I like using the outliner to duplicate so that the duplicate mesh is in the same spot as the original. Then hide and lock the original character mesh. If the duplicate mesh was virtual mirrored then freeze it. If there are not too many points on the mesh, you may want to SMOOTH the faces out to increase the resolution of the mesh. On the duplicate mesh delete any part of the mesh that will not be part of the clothing. For example, if you are making a shirt, then delete the head of the model, the neck, the forearms, the hands, and any part of the body below the pelvis. This leaves a piece of geometry that resembles a piece of clothing. Now select all the faces in the duplicate mesh and inflate the mesh by about 30% using the MOVE>NORMAL command (estimate this). This increases the volume of the mesh which is important because we will be shrinking the volume later. Then, with all the faces selected, switch to vertex mode. Then select DEFORM>CRUMPLE>RANDOM and make the mesh rough and crumpled. (Don't worry if it looks bad or the mesh intersects itself - we will fix it). With all the vertices still selected, perform the TIGHTEN command until the mesh is a bit smoother but still rough and crumpled enough to look like cloths (You be the judge - This command should also decrease the volume of your mesh). At this point, unhide the original mesh, and tweak the duplicate mesh until you have the desired result. Try to make sure that the clothing does not intersect the original character mesh. At this point, you can do one of two things:
Select the faces of the clothing where there would be openings (For example on a shirt select the faces of the neck of the shirt, the openings at the sleeves, and the bottom of the shirt) and apply a "_hole_" material to them. When you export to 3ds or any other program, these faces will not be exported or
Select the faces of the clothing where there would be openings and perform the INTRUDE command to add a thickness to the clothing. Wings will create the inside of the clothing. Pretty cool.
Now show off your clothing to your friends and watch them ohh and awe.
Hope this helps.

Hi,
To making cloth there is a very good plug in named Sim Cloth. It is a free plug in. U can use it. It used to create realistic cloth effects.
Have a nice day.------Neil

Sim Cloth is a Max plug-in. It does not work with Wings.

clothes are going to be tough. typically stuff like a jersey or fine cloth is done as a plane, however, wings doesn't do planes. so if you do it, you will have to make really thin boxes
Of course it does!
Take a box, apply the _hole material to the top and the bottom.
What you now have is just the same as if you had used planes in another model app.
When you render or export, the faces assigned with the _hole material will be removed.
So if plane thin cloting is what is needed there is no problem doing so.
Start with your box (or what you prefere) and when done, just apply _hole material to the faces that you dont want.
For my own part, if I where to do say shorts or a skirt I would not want them to be plane thin as I dont think it will look that god (it does of course depend on what the model is intended for).
I would start out as in the previous example but instead of applying _the hole material I would rather hollow them out using the intrude command thus getting both an inside and an outside.
EDIT:
To early in the morning as I cant be fully awake.
Started to read Fro Lees post but if I had read it to the end I would know that he also did mention the _hole and intrude command.
Sorry for repeating ;(
