So chekky chekky:
As you can see by the lil' post counter to your left, I am cheesecore. However, with hard work and pleasently toasted conversation, I plan to rise from the ranks of total noobishness.

Anyway, on with the show...

K, heres the critique I seek:

What should I do with the background? I've tried many approaches but all of them seem either too active or too subtle.
The current background is the only one I tried that even came close to what I wanted. I desire the character to stad out as seperate from the bg, possibly even unrelated to it. However, I still wish the background to have some life of it's own, as this peice (and most of my pop peices) are quite simplistic. Also, do the subtle gradients of the face, hands and heart clash with the superflat shading of the clothing, glasses and hat? thanks (in advance) for the help...

Oh snap!
(heh)

I just realized the lightsourcing on the hearts all mussed up.

K...

Lightsourcing fixed, plus I made it less blurry.
better?

Hmmm. I like the flat shading best, so I'd say ditch the gradients. Except if you really need them, e.g. for blushy cheeks and such. Then it's cool.

As for the background, do you know the (european) box for Sonic The Hedgehog on Megadrive/Genesis? With lots of flat, monochromatic zig-zags, circles and lines, plus a few cute animals? You gotta have seen it to know what I mean. Now, I think that's probably what you wanted to do. So if you haven't seen it, look here: http://www.vgmuseum.com/scans/SonicPAL.jpg

With the background? Put the circles behind his head, it wil draw the attention to his expression, wich will give it more power.
And I agree with Roel on the shading: loose the gradients. It doesn't need it. And you are gradiating allready in a different way: as in the triangles on his hat, wich fits better with it.
And for last (I remember that you did ask for c&c ;) ) try to get some more contrast in the colors.
Waiting for an update, jeroentje

K:

extended and limpified tail on heart...
added contrast in the bg(good?)...
added kanji...
made eyes all bambi-core...
centered bg on head...
fixed feet and relocated body...

I really like the eyes...

As for contrasting colors, I am studying color theory and it has done a lot for me, but has unfortunately made me very afraid of using multiple hues...

I'm a bit of a perfectionist...

Hmm, that's odd, it worked yesterday...

Go to http://www.vgmuseum.com/
Under "game scans" (green menu on the right), choose "Mega Drive" (not Genesis).
Look for "Sonic The Hedgehog (PAL)".

That should do the trick.
