Excellent. I really like the way you pulled off the oil painted look. Looks very natural. I’m wondering if you filtered this piece or actually painted the soft shadows on the brush strokes? Either way great execution!

Great technique you've got there, doesn't look digital!
The only crit I have is that the left cheekbone looks a bit flat..I am no expert in human anatomy, nor am I a good artist, so take my critique lightly:)
Great work:)

Nice work. It has a 'Gainborough-ish' quality to it - although Gainsborough would have had more clothes on the model - LOL. Great technique. I love the way you have worked the hair and integrated it into the background. Terrific drawing.

Good Luck with your new book! (If this image is any indication... )

It reminds me the reneval paints of an other website.
Great work!
But I'm not really a fan of the ellipse in the background.

Indeed nice portrait!

A Beautiful art piece. I truly feel the form of the portrait, I feel the emotion. You have captured the skill of the old masters with this digital media. The yellow flower which color also translate well. set in front of her, as though your looking at her through some piece of hand crafted glass door. The appearence as though she is emerging from the backgound. Beautiful. I only wish I could have control of Painter like you, then these images in my head wouldn't be stiffling consistantly, trying to get out.
A Beautiful Piece.

Just what I was thinking, extremely well done. Dutch Master pieces from the 17th century my most favorite art period and style.

For me its the face! 100% oldschool great! The flesh color is nice. Very subtle with only a bit red where it is needed. Great work.

Beautiful work, Mr. Seegmiller! I love your handling of brushstrokes. I've been using painter for almost a year now and have yet to figure out how to do that effectively.

I think it is wonderful, fantastic piece. My only crit is the collar bone neck area, it looks a bit too hard and to me is a little distracting. Overall great job!

Thanks everyone that has looked at the piece. I appreciate the comments.
The brush strokes are not filtered but a custom variant of a brush that I built in Painter. It gives you more flexibility than an effect in that you can vary the amount of the brushed effect using different settings. In this case I used stylus pressure to drive the depth of the stroke.
I did use a Wacom Tablet and Stylus. I am actually using the new Intous 3 tablet and liking it very much. I will check the anatomy in the shoulder/collar bone area. Sometimes when I have looked at an image for so long, I can not see the problems clearly which is why I do appreciate comments.

The tutorials on my web site are problematic for me. I really don't want to post tutorials that will compete with the books that I have slaved over....nevertheless, I do have the intention of getting them working again at some point.

Thumb nail does need work. Left the hand generally less finished than the face on purpose but that does indeed need a bit more attention. Thanks.

Sorry, never tell who my models are. :)

I have posted a couple of close up images at 100% the image size. They may help give a better feeling about how I did the brush work. The goal was to handle things like oil in that the lighter colors would be built up with texture more than the darks. This is particularly noticable in the flower. An interesting side is that I did not really use any texture in the skin and face as it became a distraction. Hopefully the effect is of the two areas being handled in a similar manner without a distracting texture in the skin. here are the links.

Don,

I just visited your site and the dragon on your splash page looked strangely familiar... As a matter of fact, I *KNEW* I'd seen someplace before, and not on the web, just recently.

Last night, as a matter of fact...

On the cover of a book by Cornelia Funke that I was reading to my two boys entitled Dragon Rider :applause::D

Fun stuff. My boys love your dragon picture. I'm kind of fond of it as well :)

I hope to do book covers at some point myself. It's a major goal of mine, so when I notice things like this, it's a kick.

Cheers again,
~Oregano (who's off to browse your site and order your book!)

Hi, Don. It's Stephen Broome from Digital Broome. As always your work is great, this one has a Sargent quality to it without being derivative. Hope you've been well!

it is very nice Don - what i dont understand is why in a tutorial on the figure you cant show the figure? I am sure that, like me, you have spent many hours working from life. I lost my "shyness" over working with nudes long ago. Or is that forbidden here?

loved you book on character design and looking forward to what's to come

Noen,

Good question. Often it is the publisher that has specific rules governing what is acceptable and not acceptable for their audience. Such is the case. I should do a full blown tutorial on a nude figure on my site where these restrictions do not exist.....hmmmm, good thought.

Really great portrait!
It truely has this oil painting feel to it. I just love it.
I really liked how you contrast the background from the figure using this wild strokes for the background and how that merges with the hair! You did an awesome job!
The only thing I that confused me, was her fingernail. It kind of sticks out, but maybe that's just me.

Hello, very sympathetic this painting, I like the use of the varnish,
which imitates rather well the reality of true a painting.

While a beautiful piece I must say that your flower gives a sizable amount of competition with the wonderful job you did of the girls face. My eye goes to her face for a split second before being yanked down to the flower...perhaps adding a touch less contrast around the flower might help this. But then again your in a book, and I am not. HAH!

That is one of the great things about painting figures. The center of interest is almost always the face....Something about human nature draws us to the face first....

You could be right. I may have too much contrast around the flower and need to look at that. The eye is attracted by areas of greatest contrast and while I did want this to be seconday, it may be too front and center..

About the book thing....all it means is that you have fooled someone into thinking you know what you are talking about.. :)
