View Full Version : Max has slowed down...

Hi all,

I've been working on a character recently and everything was working fine. I loaded the scene today and for some reason it took 30 seconds to load! The character is only 10000 faces without sub-div's and I can rotate and zoom without any slow down. When I try to turn an edge or cut a poly it takes about 10 seconds and sometimes crashes, failing to save the scene! It's worse when I try to rig and apply a Skin modifier. I can move verts without a problem.

If I apply a meshsmooth I get a maxscript error and it crashes. This is before I increse the iteration. It doesn't even appear in the stack!

What could be causing this? At first I got a pop up saying it was low on virtual memory to I increased the virtual ram to 4000mb min / max in My Computer > Control Panel > System > Avanced > Performance options > Optimize performance for applications. I think i did this right but I'm a n00b.

Here's some info from dxdiag,

GeForce FX 5200 128 Mb
512 Mb Ram
Athlon XP 2600+ MMX 3dNow ~ 2.1 Ghz
Display 1280 X 1024 High Color (16 bit)
DirectX 9.0b
Windows 2000 Professional
HD space 76.6 GB (44.8 GB used)

I've scanned my PC form virus with AVG 6.0 but it didn't find anything.

Any ideas? :(

Hi ,
I think it's bug in your save file, open a new scene , and merge your character scene File>Merge .

try this , if you have always the same problem , i will give you others solutions , but merging is often a best way for this kind of problem.

Thanks Falfa,

I just tried merging the mesh and the lights (without the bones) and it seems to have fixed the problem. It's still a little slow on some commands though. I think the problem started after I tried the character rigging tutorial in Max . Every time I try and create a rig something always goes wrong :(.

EDIT: I tried adding meshsmooth and got that error again,

Addmodfunc.ms Maxscript

fn Is Creating obj = Try ((isCreatingObject obj) and (iskindof Obj node))
Catch (false)
)
(

Maxscript macroscript Exception
Unknown system exeption

Application error.

Try with Obj , save a copy , delete all in scene except geometry , export in Obj , you must have a little plugin from Habware ( ObjToMax and MaxToObj ) , it's free , that will export only geometry and no others kind of informations , start a new scene and import your Obj , add a meshsmooth .
If you want to get your lights or others , merge parts of your old scene that you need .

Before all modifications ( rigging , skinning etc..) , save a clean scene copy , and keep it , like that if you have any problem , you could back to a clean state.

Thanks again,

I'll dl'd that plugin :) I actually saved a clean copy prior to rigging my model but that seems to be corrupt too. I merged the geometry again and it's working without errors (touch wood).

Hello!

Try to write "gc()" in the command line on the down left corner. This refreshing the MAXmemory. Maybe its help.

... kind of late i thing :hmm: but anyway.

I know the scene you are workin on,.....

Do you have hundreds of lights in the scene?
Did you install the latest service pack from discrete?
Are your literations for your model (meshsmooth) higher than 2?
Defraged your disk lately?
Drivers can be a bitch, check you have the latest updates cause this can slow you to a crawl. Read up on how to install them this can be tricky.

Good luck man!

MegaGeo,

Thanks for the tip.

Hey Kanga,

I exported the mesh with .3DS and imported it into a new scene. This fixed everything.
I had about 10 omni lights with multipliers of around 0.2. The mesh is only 2 iterations with meshsmooth so it isn't that heavy.

I'll update those things you listed,

thanks man!

Okey dokey!

Sounds Like file corruption but,......
Reading the 3dmax documentation there is a line saying: 'You can even have as many as 6 omni lights in your scene!'.

Dude 10 omnis is rediculous,..... waaaaay too much lighting. This is as bad as too many polys! Most complex lighting rig I have had is 1 omni and about 4 spots.
