View Full Version : Concept Art: Demon Warrior

This is my first attempt at using markers. It's kind of sloppy and rough but I kind of like how it turned out. Right now my plan is to turn this guy into a mid-poly game character for my portfolio. Critiques and comments are always appreciated.

Nice design, and well done marker shading
To be honest, I think you could keep it even rougher than this. Keeping your outlines and shading rough and fast, will keep speed and tension in it. Markers are the perfect tool for fast looking rough sketches.
Keep posting, markers rock :buttrock:

Honestly Erik, I love all your characters as of late, you really capture some good qualities that are hard to find in concept art...
There's seriously not much to crit, just clean up the lines and you has one nice piece

No I disagree. Keep the lines as they are. It will become very static if you do. It will loose all the "held back power" (is this English?) in the character. Things don't allways have to look clean. Rough can be better.
I have to agree with Jeroentje......

Nice drawing, the character has a great sense of power.
However, there is a slight (and easily corrected) perspective problem with his left leg. The foreshortening is a little off.
Have you posted any colour work?

Yeh I see what you mean, I guess it depends on how Erik will use it, I have nothing against line work like this, cause I think it adds lotsa character :) but depending how it will be used it can swing either way... but I do agree with you if that's his intentions

Thanks for the comments guys. I really prefer to work work quick and rough myself because I can get the idea out of my head and onto paper before I lose it. Unfortunately sometimes that's not so great for proportions or lighting and stuff like that :P I haven't done much color work up till now, that's next on the list to practice on.
PS: Just noticed I'm linked on the top banner thingy. Cool!

Glad to find someone with the same interest.

I checked out your "not dwarf" Norante. Very nice! and clean, I love that sort of mix between cartoony and realistic. That's the look that I'm always trying for.
I don't have any more marker stuff because this was my first one. but I like it (maybe it's just getting high off the smell :P) so I'll post more stuff when i get it done.
element 412, actually 20%, 40% and 60% (I only bought the even numbers)

The perspective on the neck and head is really annoying me, but I love your line work and the character itself is great.

Its hard to think of this as concept art.
The work itself is amazing. Good Jobbo!

Hey Erik,
Great job, markers have always been someting Id like to get into more seriously.
On the Crit for you;
The demon's left leg needs work (but somone else said that already) :)
Also look at where the eyes are placed on his head. If his left eye is really that far back, then you wouldn't be able to see his right eye from that head angle. It is very common to want to put both eyes on a character from a 3/4 view. In most cases you would, but I dont think you would with this guy's head.
Keep up the good work, I'm going to go get my greyscale markers and start scrubbing again. Thanks for the inspiration.
