Just finished this tonight. My first project in Maya. I wanted to create a moody image. Like a children's painting gone bad. Let me know what you think! All constructive criticism is welcome.

I like it, i love stuff like this. Might make the bar to the handle a bit thinner, and the the bends, more circular, as in not elliptical. I would crop it different,

much nicer. gives the impression its looking at something now. The lid looks a bit thick. the grip on the handle could be a bit longer. the accordion material could use some wrinkles and folds in teh cloth. I like it

I like the last rendering but I think you need to make the face look at the camera and have it lean forward toward the camera. Just leave the box where it is.

Leave the box where it is, but inverse it, so the handle to be in the left side, as you have empty space in top left corner. Or just move the box in the left bottom corner. The handle shouldn't be in the side of the margin when you have a composition with empty space. (and by the way - good composition)

Successful render, looks like painting. Try to add a specific lightning, something to look different. :)

Make him look more mean than he is now, and i also think you should make him lean down towards the camera.

Great Job otherwise!

Thanks for the C&C everyone!

Anton: what do you mean by specific lighting. Could you elaborate?

GlaSs: Well, I don't want him to look too mean. I still wanted it to look like it just might have actually been a toy. But one that was just over the edge. Like one made by a slightly disturbed toymaker.

It seems that everyone wants a different composition so I'll see if they'll let me post some more renders from different angles and with different postitions. I link all my images so its not like they'll be taking up space or anything, so opefully my thread won't be moved.

I meant that you can express something with light too. Your actual lightning is just for lightning, just objects to be visible. You can use lightning effects, there is a great potential in them! For example if your clown is evil you can make you light a bit red from the bottom, an "inferno" lightning, and so on...

Make it a little more interesting! Success! :)

cool Anton... Theres a little bit of colored ligting, and I stayed away from lighting too heavily as I wanted a moodier piece, but lighting is definitely one of my weak points. I'll see about pushing it farther in subsequent posts. Maybe a bit of volume light etc... an more thought into the emotional impact of my lighting.

Allrighty then... I have followed the suggestions and made another render, paying more attention to lighting, mood, etc... I put a nice little aim constraint one the eyes so that they would follow my camera. Let me know what you think, did you like the 1st ones better or this one?

I have to agree that lighting could set the mood almost as well as facial expressions and body posture. I think this scene calls for saturation. I would use bold blue lights to emphasize the areas that should be covered in shadow. Strong red spots positioned well above the jack-in-the-box and aimed directly at it would strengthen the mood on his face. White light is boring, so you should try to come up with another color for fill. And you might want to try to emphasize his face more with green uplighting that is linked only to the spring and the head of the jack-in-the-box. (The green uplight is somewhat of a college inside-joke among my peers, but sometimes it works. Try it out. )

By the way, when I first saw this topic in the index, I expected to see this:

Much better now! :)

But there should be a shadow besides the box, from the red light.
Turn the shadows on to the red light, so eyes to be darker - it will add an evelish look...

Red light is something unrealistic - and so it should be. But now you need to make a dark background because we see a red light but we don't see it's source. It should be a hell fire  , not simply a lamp beside... hope you understand what I mean :)

Success!
