View Full Version : no photons again?
johnnynightlife 09-24-2004, 11:24 PM For some reason, any scene that i have ever made comes up with the error, "no photons stored..."
I have created a new, very simple scene, just a cube, and a point light, and no matter how high of a photon count, or energy level i make, i get this error.
Any clues whats happened to my mental ray?
I had this problem once or twice before, but it was because i either had something in the way of my light source, or too low of a photon count, now its happening in every scene, which prior to two days ago, was rendering ok.:scream:

yes.. you're confused. :)
photon tracing 'happens' really only with GI.. also do not use a point light.. it spreads out photons in all directions... and if any hit a surface with a photon part attached you get that error.. instead use a dome sphere as a container for your simulation and a spot light to 'point' photons on your targets... to expose a bit your personal mysteries.. the fact that you believe that before was working and that you get the error 'only' with GI is simply because it was not working before and it is not working right now.. but without GI you get no photon tracing and so also no error.. :)

i got confused soemtimes too... specially after some beers... Mentalray is so difficult to understand..lol :scream: but its the best render... and never forget.. Area Lights Rulez!

Francescaluce,
thanx for the tips. Only after i reinstalled maya, my scenes rendered ok, and they all had point lights, which is confusing me about waht you said. all of my scenes are enclosed in an architectural scene, ie, ceilings and walls, should i still enclose the entire scene in a sphere?
I'm also a little confused why after one day i had this error, when nothing was changed from the day before:shrug:
Hi,
I thought I would add my two cents to this threadhttp://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/smile.gif.
I have noticed that the placement of your pointlights(or mr area lights) are pretty important to the no photons stored problem as well. In this example i attached I have a sphere surrounding the scene but still had problems. This was because of my light placement. On the right pic I had placed my light slightly outside the window which caused the photons problem. On the left I moved the light half way through the window and that fixed the problem. I like to think of photons as particles that collide with everyting, so in the pictre on the right they we're just bouncing off and for some reason were not connecting with the sphere.
Im not sure if photons are effected by unit size so maybe your scene was originaly in feet and after the reinstall it was reset to cm's. Just a thought.

Ill be a little more specific.
One day all of my scenes that i have ever created were rendering fine, the very next day not a single scene would render without getting the no photons stored error. I am saying that I didnt change anything in my scenes from the day that they were rendering ok, to the day that i had this problem,
I should have explained my situation a little less confusing.
Heres one of my scenes that i had a problem with. After i reinstalled maya, and with no additional changes to the scene, i had no problem rendering again.
All of these scenes that had the problem had the lights within the geometry, and there is nothing blockign, or in front of these lights:shrug:
anyways, its fixed now....:applause:

Those photons are driving me mad....
Is there any workflow that will ensure that photons emmited by my spotlight will hit the geometry....I m posting the screenshot to show you my light's position....
All the time i get those errors and warnings about photons not being stored in my photon map....But its sounds totally unlogical and stupid to me because the focus of my light is encompassing the hole interior model i have...why are they running away?.. ..Also do one MUST use photon shaders to work with GI or this is like additional control for controlling photon bounces not dependant on Material Shader properties?
Thanx in advance
