View Full Version : Viewport navigation with trackball
dvornik 08-12-2002, 01:22 AM Sorry for this newbie question, but is there a way to change the default viewport navigation setup? I use a trackball and clicking 2 buttons and rolling the ball while holding alt key at the same time (to zoom) is a pain. I also use a wacom, and it works with no problems. But the trackball is hard to use. I don't want to go back to mouse just for this.

well, i was using a logitech trackball before i complete switched to wacom-input and never had any problems with it ...
isn't it possible to move the ball with your thumb while clicking buttons with your fingers ?!
anyway, have you ever tried to make yourself familiar with wacom-based-viewport-navigation ( hehheh nice, eh ) ?
i find it much more relaxed once i got used to it ...

Yeah, wacom is simple. I set one pen switch to middle-click and and it's works quite well. Do you have a different setup?
My problem with wacom is that while switching between different appz on dual monitors I sometimes get some cursor jumps and even freezes. It works OK in one program, but right now I switch between tutorials and Maya all the time, so wacom is really annoying. I've been struggling with it for a couple of years (not in Maya) on different PCs and tablets, so I'm convinced it's a driver bug.
Of course it's possible to move the ball while holding buttons with 2 fingers. It's just a pain in the ass. It's not a thumb trackball - the ms optical one.

ok, that's not too comfortable then ...
basically i use the same setup that you do, but i never experienced those symptoms of a buggy driver !
which tablet and OS are you using ?
i got an Intuous2, which worked flawlessly on win2k/XP and linux on several different gfx-boards ( matrox g450/ati radeon 8500/geForce 4 ti 4600 ) ... :hmm:

Why what's wrong with them? I worked on my friends computer and she had one of them - I really liked it and bought it the next day. After I bought it I stopped using the mouse and hardly use wacom. It's much less repetitive stress. The only problem is that particular one is assymetrical so I can't use it with another hand.

Sorry, I guess I sounded overly protective of trackballs :)
The problems I have with Intuos2 and used to have with Intuos (on PIII, then XP; Matrox, GF4, Quadro4; Win2k) is that when I switch between applications on different monitors it sometimes freaks out. Like the cursor jumps. Or gets stuck, or dissappears. I've tried tweaking the driver settings, but it didn't help. Using the wacom mouse together with the pen makes it even worse.
