Title: Study Katie Holmes's Portrait With Vector Painting
Name: Jerome Birembaut
Country: France

This vector picture have been realisee with flashMX,
it was really an enormous challenge for me

to obtain these gradients
I hope you enjoy as much as I was pleased to create it
you can view the flash file here (http://dreammania.net/test/realisme/realisme18.swf)
the animated flash file (http://dreammania.net/test/realisme/realisme_anim.swf)
and a sample Flash file ( eye ) (http://dreammania.net/test/realisme/realisme_demo.zip)

Jerome-
Beautiful Piece!
Couple of things: Her right nostril looks a bit odd; not as defined as the left. And the necklace looks as if it's just floating there. Maybe some shading against the skin beneath the necklace.
Love the flash WIP and the overall soft "feel" you've achieved here!
Good job, keep 'em coming.

omigosh! this is just fantastic. the only place that the vectors kinda show are the eye-lashes, but anyone would've only thought so since you told us. again, just blows me away. great work!

Astounding work! I thought it was ace to begin with, but as soon as i saw that it was flash, i was blown away! Truly excellent stuff!
If i have to be really picky, id say that the lower lip shape and shading could use a few tweaks, but overall, its bloody brilliant!

Thank you guys for your comments,
I use a graphics tablet but a mouse would have been enough to make this drawing under flash,
this picture took me approx 25 hours to paint and research ( very long time XD )
but it's my first try, maybe the next drawing will be faster
bye

Hey you make me crazy! I donīt have idea the effort you put into this piece. To make your work more incredible, please fix the collar or jewelery, it looks out of place. I donīt now if itīs only me, but the neck seems too fat. Also tell us how you did it, for me look as pieces of Photoshop assembled in Flash.

Beautiful girl...

you can view the flash file here (http://dreammania.net/test/realisme/realisme18.swf)

my secret?
It's a 1000 years old Chineese technic that I've trade yesterday with 3 Smarties box to a true false chineese...
nobody will believe now XD

There is a little exemple here http://dreammania.net/test/realisme/demo.swf
and explications :

1- draw a super pie with the brush
2- select the pie and smooth it a max (http://dreammania.net/test/realisme/smooth.jpg)
3- round his border to don't have to breaking angles.
4- convert the shape into MovieClip
5- apply a softening to the shape with the options you want.
6- set alpha on the parent clip of the anim

this is both very easy, very shitting and very complex when we have 200 clip to manage XD

thanks.

Thats incredible!!! I can't draw anything in flash, always had to export from illustrator when i did schoolprojects ... I like the look of the image, reminds me of paintbrushed work or those "hyperrealism" paintings they used to maken in the '80s (i think, if only i paid attention in arts history...)

09-26-2004, 08:50 AM
It's a similar technique that is used in Adobe Illustrator (or Freehand) and the blend tool... very time consuming and tedious work using a photo in the background as reference. You will see the blend shapes if you right-click and ZOOM IN when viewing her face (especially in the eye areas) in your browser. Great stuff :applause:

SORRY about my lost questions

i just read your reply posted on the first page on time taken to do the image.

this is an amazing picture, especially since it is an vector image
However, and I hate to be the one to break it to you all, It is an exact replica of a photo of katie
regularly referred to as a paintover. It is not a crime or anything but most people like to be informed of this kind of stuff.

I can show the pic if anyone wants to see it.

I can show the pic if anyone wants to see it. I think everyone had understood that...
but if you can make a "paintover" ( it's not realy that ) look like this in flash, show me please :D

Colin de bink
09-26-2004, 12:09 PM
My apologies if you made it clear that it was a "paintover" but I could not find any reference to it in any of the posts in this tread and I read them all to be sure (I could have missed it). anyway you say it can't be called a "paintover" because it is flash? lets call it a "flashover" then. It doesn't matter the principal is the same.

here is the image.
you can lay them over in photoshop, the are exactly the same.

please keep in mind that I still find this an incredibly well done image.

Seraf
09-26-2004, 12:24 PM
Well of course I use this picture as reference, but not in layer,
the final face are more lifted, unified etc well we don't care.

sorry if i haven't specified it explicitly.

nobody needs to be informed about painting over. I believe that most of the guys here saw this picture of Katie Holmes at least once .
In photoshop it could be a trick but in Flash.. Damnnn Beautifuuul!! Zoom, Zoom,Zoom,Zooooom!!!
Please make more! Maybe after seeing your work, Macromedia puts some advanced drawing tools to the next version of flash.

Respect!

Man, you are crazy! Itīs more than perfect.

Why do this in Flash? Hehehe. For you guys who never used Flash: itīs like creating this piece in Illustrator and Corel Draw ( vector illustration packages, unlike Photoshop), but itīs even more difficult, because it doeīsnt have all the tools.

Congratulations!!!

09-26-2004, 04:46 PM
You're insane ;) Damn, that's impressive! Got to agree with someone who said the neck looks a bit fat though. It's probably because there appear to be some shading missing under her jaw at the right side of the image. Also, isn't her chin a bit to round? Awesome work regardless of course, keep it up ( or rather, do it in an easier prog so we get to see more of this stuff ;) ).

fuggin' amazing. i'm so freakin blown away. i looked at it at first n' i was like "how the crap... did he custom make all those gradiants?!@"

i was gonna go mad. but heard about the smooth technique. damn genius. that's gonna completly change the way i've been creating content in flash.

btw, to do smoothing...

select any shape in flash
modify>>shape>>soften fill edges...

oh my the goodness.

Amazing. What is the file size of the fla? I've noticed Flash sometimes grinds to a halt with a lot of vectors on the stage.

Oh yeah, and what does "1- draw a super pie with the brush" mean?
