hello I was wondering if anyone knew how to set a density map well still having one face color map and still having lots of hair ids and do all of this after you set the hair ids for the entire head . I hop thismake sense I could really really use some help

Just add as many material slots to your multi/subobject material as you need to control all the shag parameters, the slot numbers don't have to correspond in any way to the material IDs on the model (kinda counter-intuitive, which I guess is why this quesion is asked so often).
thanks for the help but how do you get the uvw layout for the a density map if you have to set the id to ad the uvw. when I do this it causes all of the prevoius hair id layout selection to be overwrote.

You don't need to alter the material IDs in any way to apply a UVW map modifier. Apply a Mesh Select, Apply a UVW Map mod (using a fresh map channel), Add a new material onto the bottom of your head material, put your density map in the diffuse slot and set it to reference the last UVW Map mod you applied.
