MasterZap 08-11-2002, 08:09 PM EDIT: QuickTime now available, as is new domain www.KIDWARS.com (http://www.kidwars.com)
EDIT2: The "Chrome Mapping" plugin for 3DS MAX 4.x now available, www.Master-Zap.com/chrome/ (http://www.master-zap.com/chrome/)

KID WARS is a thing I whipped up with the kids in frustration of getting laid off from my job. Enjoy.
Here is the webpage about it (http://www.z4p.com/kidwars) and here a direct link to the anim (Windows Media .ASF file) (http://www.lysator.liu.se/~zap/kidwars/kidwars384.asf)
It all started innocently as a demo clip for my "Chrome Mapping" plugin (not quite ready for public consumption yet) which is used to get animated real world reflection into the robot parts. (Hmm, see the movie for more info) and playing around w. some compositing..... and then the kids took creative control....and the rest is history. :)

Hey, very nice! Sorry about the layoff, but hey, think of it in a postive note, more time for 3D, :buttrock:
It had a funny good feeling to the movie. Good job on the compositing, it would be interesting what you could do given the right equipment, actors, and studio! Nice job!

Yes, exactly. That was the whole point of making it. For 1 guy, 3 kids, a computer, and a couple of weeks I think it turned out relatively nifty :)

HA!
Someone found a way to make those boring home videos actually look cool :p
joking aside, I think it was really good :D I especially liked the part where they climb out of the ship. I found that to be a pretty ingineous way of combining household props and cg compositing.
Kudos on the reflections on the Arnie model. They really made the shot. I think with an original demo reel like that you'll find a job in no time.
good luck

Great job for such little time and limited resources. Good to see parnets spending lots of time with their kids, too.

Haha, sounds like you have a future Hollywood producer in the family. Great job on all that compositing. The only thing that scared me a bit was when the battle took place on the pool cover! Thank goodness for force powers!

I just saw it. Freakin brilliant! I'm still laughing my arse off. Wish I my dad had done something like this when I was a kid. I would have been the coolest guy in the 4th grade. Hope this get's a lot of play on the fan sites!!!

great compositing, i used to make these kind of films my self and although ur sabers need work, the 3d/2d composites and live action composites were great(obviously this wasnt intended to be serious). :buttrock: :buttrock:

I laughed so hard I lost my head. I think it rolled under the table, oh yeah, there it is.
The kids were great!!!
Thanks for making my day a little brighter.
I also loved all the behind the scenes stuff at the end.

That is my hope, my friend, that is my hope.

Might work. Oscar is a natural acting talent. He *is* the part. He *is* the part to the level of not taking any directing ;) Whereas Victor is much more "assitant director in front of camera" kinda guy... loooking more at the camera than his opponent, while coming with suggestions on what should happen next in realtime.
Haha, sounds like you have a future Hollywood producer in the family. Great job on all that compositing
Thanks, it's a bit edgy in places, especially the bit where "multiple clones of oscar runs out the door" bit, because that was initially not going to be used... I thought....(boy was I wrong!)....so I really slapped that composite together, literally. Should be fixed up really..... loadsa unfeathered masks and shit. (plus a cloud made the light vary between runs so edges can be seen in the masks....)
The only thing that scared me a bit was when the battle took place on the pool cover!
Not *on*! On a two-foot wide concrete ledge AROUND the pool, thank you. Pretty safe ;)
I just saw it. Freakin brilliant! I'm still laughing my arse off
OMG, OMG, OMG, the Nyxies guy thinks I... *I*....did something cool. OMG, OMG, OMG (my heart, my heart :) )
ur sabers need work
I know, its pretty well explained by me in the thread over at www.fanfilms.com why it is the way it is (besides lack of time)
I also loved all the behind the scenes stuff at the end.
Thanks... I've been showered w. requests for tutorial and how-to docs on how this was done so I might make a real "behind the scenes" thing later.
There *is* a behind-the-scenes video done for my "other" live action/cgi project, the nina video, found here (http://www.NinaGoddess.com/video2.html) - enjoy ;)

Cool, I'm working on a Star Wars flick myself, starring my mom and I (eh , I'm 13) but I dont have much family, so that may be it, unless I stick some CG dudes in there. Originally we were just going to have a lightsaber battle test, but your flick has made me want to extend it.....nj!

OMG, when you did the force powers, HOLY SHIT DID THAT ROCK, i just love refractions, and that was just awesome, and the sound associated with it too, that deep *VLRUGHHHH* ...omg, im so stealing that!
Its pretty simple, I used the ripple-filter in Adobe After Effects, w. some appropriate masking..... so it's totally out of the 3D Realm. (However, you can do some nifty ripples in 3DS Max by using the "thin wall refraction" map in the refraction slot and tell it to refract the environment, and then have your video as background.....)
The sound is done in my own software Stomper (http://www.master-zap.com/stomper/) which is originally intended for drumsounds but can do deep stuff easily :)
Be careful w. your speakers tho.

that was a great little short. A lot of the effects looked like low-res versions of what you see in the actual starwars, so I think they looked fine (at least when they were compressed and lost detail).
Some of it was a little hokey, but most of it was funny.
The chrome effect thing was really neat.
MasterZap

Well the effects themselves could be improved (they always can, even ILM can ;) ) but judging from the time it took to do the movie, I think it turned out perdy much ok :)
