Unfortunately no. Spdl add or modify entries in the Windows registry, wich is the business of administrator account. I wish XSI had its own registry, like mental ray, so no **** around with rights/permissions/privileges and workgroup problems with spdls.

Sorry for the rant, but I had many days of nightmare just because of that very thing.

well i figured out how to add tabs in the param set, just select the Custom Param Set itself and create>custom param set within the param set...!! so simple jeez

Awww.. Finally a solution! :)
One thing bothers me though. Creating a parameter set within a existing param set creates a drop down tab, not a folder tab.. Because of this, if the property window is little and there are a lot of parameters, you often scroll up or down too much and have to click on the tab again to get to the the top of the selected parameter set.
But, it's nothing more than a small inconvenience, so I'm glad there's way to create tabs without admin privs. Thanks fox!

Now if I can only find a way to sort and re-order pramameters w/o admin privs :wise:
In case anyone wants to know how to edit SPDL file to create tabs and sort params, here's a link to a tutorial http://www.softimage.com/Community/Xsi/Xsinews/11012001_vol1_iss10/nl_10.htm
It's almost at the bottom of the page.

Well the major problem I see is for scripting. You'd have to iterate on the cpset structure to check all available parameters..... Not very convenient.

Soft needs to put in a easier way to create tabs and groups in property editors without us having to go in and edit the spdl. I dont mind doing it but it always messes up something. :\
