View Full Version : Above & Beyond - Vehicle - Baal
Hi guys! I've been really impressed by the recent works on this forum, especially during the Beast of Burden contest, so I decided I would enter this month's contest.
So here are my first sketchs on what I plan to work on.
Overall sketch...

...details on the back part
http://baal.pingouin.ca/cgtalk_aout/cgtalk_baal_sketch_02.jpg
That's it!

The bottom part did not really allowed me to put much details in it so I thought I might give it a second try, so after some more work (:wip: :wip: ), here's what I came with. I prefer this one alot more. (I am keeping the top with the balloon tho)
http://baal.pingouin.ca/cgtalk_aout/cgtalk_baal_sketch_03.jpg
Oh and yes, I know I have some perspective problem with the stairs/ladder but I'll figure out something :arteest:
Started modelling the engine, done with the balloon but I'll show it only with the engine attached (I still haven't figured out how I'll do that tho).
The engine...
http://baal.pingouin.ca/cgtalk_aout/cgtalk_baal_engine01.jpg
The engine is caged into that round tube made from old metal plates to protect it against birds: you never know when they'll feel like they'd cut a few cables!

nice modeling
but I think I had seen this idea or a close one to ur concept but I don't remember his name

mmmm, don't know if it reminds you anything but I actually designed the sketchs before seeing any of the work (I was cut of Internet for nearly 3 days - thanks to the vandalism that was done on the optic cable of my ISP). Well, like we used to say in french: "Les grands esprits se rencontrent" !
Thanks for the comments too :)
edit By the way, just let me know if you find the post where the idea is similar, I'd like to take a look! /edit
Here's an update for you guys, worked on the way the engine is attached to the balloon and also tried some post prod tips (see fellah's tutorial - great tips!)

Hope to see some comments and crits on theses parts!
Now... back to work ! :wip: :wip: :D
Worked more on it tonight, so here's where I am now:
Global angle:
http://baal.pingouin.ca/cgtalk_aout/cgtalk_baal_plate01.jpg
And a closeup view on the platform:
http://baal.pingouin.ca/cgtalk_aout/cgtalk_baal_plate02.jpg
I'm not sure wether I should keep the 'ropes' as they are right now or put something else, maybe tubes or chains... what do you think?

? how do you keep the engin from tipping ?
Errr, looks like my last 7-8 posts (yesterday's) been deleted... so I repost these images (yesterday's update)...
Added a weight to balance the balloon, it's filled with heavy stuff such as sand and lead balls:
http://baal.pingouin.ca/cgtalk_aout/cgtalk_baal_ballon01.jpg
And here's an update on the ropes:
http://baal.pingouin.ca/cgtalk_aout/cgtalk_baal_plate03.jpg
Been working on how the pilot would steer that big engine, so here's the system I came up with (very simple but effective)
http://baal.pingouin.ca/cgtalk_aout/cgtalk_baal_steering01.jpg
There will be a rope coming in by each side (see the sketch for more info on where the ropes come) and wether you turn the wheel left or right, you will roll the cables around the small wheel in the center forcing the back flap [name?] to flip left or right.
Back to work! :wip:
çà se met bien en place
c'est vrai que çà ressemblait un peu au vehicule de mikael p. (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=16503) au debut; plus maintenant :)
Last update for today!
Details of the front platform (where you can drive the whole thing):

And a global view of the whole vehicle so far:

Comments and Crits are always appreciated!
Hem seems like my host is down, so no images in this thread until it is back up... shouldn't be too long. If it's not back before the next update, I'll join my picture as an attachment! Sorry about that guys :surprised

Cool.....
Looks like it might fall like a rock though :) I don't know if that balloon? is big enough to support all the load.
but I think I had seen this idea or a close one to ur concept but I don't remember his name
Your prolly thinking of Michael P's entry. Similar.

btw... dont forget about balance and weight distribution
Thanks visualboo, I was thinking about adding something else to help the whole thing float, because it is indeed becoming very heavy! I'll work the balance once the whole thing is modeled (can't be sure of anything yet, might as well be very well balanced in the end). I'll probably make the balloon alot bigger tho, and maybe add some propelers under the bottom plateform to help the whole thing lift off!
Allright, tonight's update! :wip:
Modeled the last plateform (which serve as a restroom for the voyager), the stair to get from the 'piloting' platform to this one and finally did the front aerodynamic device, which in the end makes my machine MUCH heavier ;)
http://baal.pingouin.ca/cgtalk_aout/cgtalk_baal_front01.jpg
http://baal.pingouin.ca/cgtalk_aout/cgtalk_baal_front02.jpg
Comments and Crits are always welcome!
I thought I might send a render of the whole machine, so you get an idea of how everything comes togheter.
http://baal.pingouin.ca/cgtalk_aout/cgtalk_baal_scene02.jpg
A huge render is also available:
cgtalk_baal_scene_huge_01.jpg (1600x1200, 165 ko) (http://baal.pingouin.ca/cgtalk_aout/cgtalk_baal_scene_huge_01.jpg)
There it goes, I'm done with the bottom part. I'm going to rework the whole balance (I know it's HEAVILY unbalanced in the front part) and probably make that balloon alot bigger (since I don't think it can lift anything in the air right now).
Comments and Critics are always welcome!

hey coming along great
i like the steering mechanism you put on there
about the balance: i think you need at least 4 chains connecting the balloon to the platform (1 more in the far front and back)
i'd also make that balloon bigger, a lot bigger actually ;)
another thing: do you have some kind of blur on your renders or is it the compression...it doesn't seeam to be sharp so it's hard to make out the details in the small pics
if you have blur on it, remove it for the wip ;)
@fist: Thanks! I added some chains, and it actually looks much more balanced now. Also made the balloon bigger.
New update! The balloon is now much bigger (still need works on the detail but that gives the general idea) and I also rendered a few closeups. No blur this time ;)

very nice job...one of my favorites
crits: need these:
1. landing gears...
2. connection between pilot & engine (cables?)
3. chairs in upper deck & some crates in the lower deck.
4. waving flag
5. lights/lamps here & there

Try and come up with a couple other balloon ideas. This one looks a little to much like a bag of sand :) hehe. besides that.... all good
Maybe it just looks to heavy  oh well, nice job so far
@ila_solomon: Thanks! I'll work on it :wip: , I especially like the chairs/crate idea and the waving flag :)
@visualboo: You're so right, that balloon looks like everything but a balloon! Thanks for the comments, I'll try to figure out something. :wip:
Sorry about the lack of updates guys, but I started my first year in college yesterday and I'm not having much free time. I might get a few hours to continue modeling today, so stay tuned for an update, today or tomorrow!

I'll be waiting with bated breath!:bounce:
Brilliant work Baal!
No time to model tonight, I'm falling asleep, I think I'm not gonna love to wake up at 6:25 AM most morning ;)
Anyway, here's a little update, I manage to get some time to sketch you a little idea I had today.
Here's the picture... :arteest:
http://baal.pingouin.ca/cgtalk_aout/cgtalk_baal_sketch_04.jpg
...and some explanations (Photoshop + Mouse = Baaaad drawings  )
So I'm thinking on having three balloons, each one at the three extremity of a crosse like shaped assembly. On the forth end, there would me the motor. I will hopefully find someway to balance the whole thing, probably by adding a fourth balloon near the engine, I'm not sure yet. I'll try to find time to work on it tomorrow!
Here's a sneak peak of what I came up with, will work more on it tonight. Each balloon as the size of the balloon in the beggining of the contest (so it's 4 time more lift power). The fourth ballon that is currently floating in the air will be attached to the engine to help compensate for its weight.
http://baal.pingouin.ca/cgtalk_aout/cgtalk_baal_ballon02.jpg
Alright guys, me again! Update on the balloon, let me know what you think!
http://baal.pingouin.ca/cgtalk_aout/cgtalk_baal_ballon03.jpg
http://baal.pingouin.ca/cgtalk_aout/cgtalk_baal_ballon04.jpg
I also worked on crates, but I wasn't happy with the result so I deleted them, will try to find a better way to model them than the one I had chosen.
C&C are always appreciated! :bounce:

Thats spectacular, I love the detail.
Small update here, I had some time to work on the crates.
Thanks dark_lotus! I tried to put as much detail as possible, like if I was building this machine in real life.

yes! It's really good! I like this concetp! it's original!
I like very much how is getting! cool job Baal!
just I would like see some more colors! and maybe a little of post-production to increase the contrast and do it less "render"! just to enjoy it without textures! :p
I'm impatient to see the final ballons!
great job baal is looking very very good
i like the boxes and the barrel so much and the ropes are perfect
@pabbloz : coming from you, I take that as a real compliment! I also really like your style and what you do!
@adr : Thanks! The ropes are very simple actually, it's a small loft with a lot of twist.
Thanks all! I'm gonna try to update soon, but I don't have much free time with college... lot of work :wip: ... and  !
Small update on the bottom part, added chairs, a table, a coffee mug (for long travels) and some play cards. No bump maps nor any textures, only modeling.
http://baal.pingouin.ca/cgtalk_aout/cgtalk_baal_chairs01.jpg
C&C are always welcome, I'm gonna work on the landing gears and the engine connections now! :bounce:

Baal ... sorry..but i think the cargo deck must be the lower
one & the passengers deck the upper! :)
btw nice work...
Another update, worked on the landing gear and switched the decks. The tires are actually some car tires (they are of no use anymore now that you have this wonderful flying machine to travel from places to places! :p
http://baal.pingouin.ca/cgtalk_aout/cgtalk_baal_bottom01.jpg
Wasn't happy with the wheels so I rebuilt them. I also have the flag in place, adding some lights and I'll post an update - expect it before 22:00 PM (EST). Back to work :wip:
Last update for tonight! So there we go, four new pics!
The whole thing...
http://baal.pingouin.ca/cgtalk_aout/cgtalk_baal_scene07.jpg
...close view on the upper deck...
http://baal.pingouin.ca/cgtalk_aout/cgtalk_baal_upper01.jpg
...walking down to control the vehicle...
http://baal.pingouin.ca/cgtalk_aout/cgtalk_baal_platef02.jpg
...and a view of what's needed for long travel and to land on inexplored spots!
http://baal.pingouin.ca/cgtalk_aout/cgtalk_baal_lower01.jpg
There you go! Keep rockin' :buttrock: :airguitar :wavey:
(Sorry for the double post, too much images!)

:) nice...you did the right things about the wheels (landing gears)
about the flag...i think if it is longer, then it would be better.
also need some gas capsule for the baloons or atleast some
sort of torches...emmm...for warming the air inside baloons (if
it is not an hidrogen drive ship!)
anyway your flying machine is sooo beautifull! :)
Thanks ila_solomon! Coming from someone of your talent, that's really a huge compliment, I appreciate it alot. :)
I'll make the flag mouch longer (I'll probably make it like one of those early medieval banners, you know, very long banner with some kind of "v" cut at the end).
And yes, thoses baloons are filled with hydrogen, so I might add a backup gas capsule, just in case ;)
There, probably my final image, I won't have much time to work on it, too much work. I may have some time tho if I get good last time feedback

Great Job!!! The only thing I have to crit is the wheels seem a little too segmented to me- but other than that it looks really good!
3D Freak : Yeah... I noticed it long afer rendering. Thoses wheels were supposed to be smoothed! Arrrrh, when your computer decides that he doesn't want it the way you ask it :D

I did not see this entry during the august challenge. Now when looking I get seriously enraged.
Copying ideas like this is just strange. If you´d need concept ideas just ask.
Yes, you did add some of your own creations, but all my little details are used here.
Please create something of your own next time.
In doubt check out the the original (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=16503)
I agree your idea inspired me at first (mostly for the plank's style) but that's the only idea that has been "ripped" from you. I'm not going to argue about anything and even less excuse myself since I don't see any reasons why should I.
According to what I see, every flying machine made with baloons and planks is a ripoff?
Or in that case, everyone here copied everyone else, we all made flying contraptions, half with baloons half with engines.
... :curious:  :shame:
MikaelPersson

Balloons, well I dont see any copying in them. There were plenty of them around. The ripp is in the details.
.:: the chair with the little table and coffee cup.
.:: the same kind of material for the chair.
.:: exactly the same shape for the platforms.
.:: the ropes around the platform.
.:: the different levels of the platforms.
I just think it´s so sad and so obvious. I´ll leave it there, had to point it out though.
There is a difference in drawing inspiration from something and outright plagiarism.
