View Full Version : Issues with Plugins and module instal for R9!
talos72 09-23-2004, 06:55 AM Anyone else have issues running plugins or modules? I just installed R9 and have my BP and Sketch CDs from before, but I guess you need new R9 installers for them (I hope that's not gonna cost more cash to get installer CDs).
Also, I can't run Xfrog, Jenna or Ditools yet. None of their keys work with R9. This is getting to be a bit of a headache. Tracking down all these keys and updates and half of them don't work...I haven't even tested all of the plugins. Had to shoot off a bunch of emails to various plugin developers to inquire.

Issues with Shave2.5
They put up a patch to fix a problem with registration but it doesnt work. I hope we will get this sorted today :/ (spent 6 hours conferencing with them yesterday gah)
Hi,
for R9 you will need new module installers and serials. Please make sure to state this when ordering. For all modules that have no additional functionality (TP, PC, DYN, NET, BP2) the upgrade to R9 is currently free.
If you are using plugins that are fixed to your R8 serial you will have to contact the plugin developer for new serials. For shave a fix can be found on the Shave website http://www.shaveandahaircut.co.uk/
If you run into any problems with this fix please contact Maxon, not Joe Alter.

Shave 2.5:
dont install on R9.
just copy your folder from R.8 to the plugins folder of r9 and all will be fine.

What kind of Shave Fix is that and where on the Maxon site is it hidden?

Shave Fix can be found on the gobeyondhair domain where you register
However i am not able to install shave for a fresh R9 Studio install - no prior Versions of cinema on this machine but the installer always tries to register with XL7... and fails of course.
The fix is supposed to circumvent this problem but for me it doesnt really work.

don't quote me but i think remotion is planning an update to ditools for R9 so I think there will be a fee involved for that, however I was under the impression 1.3 would work with R9 also not sure about keys etc...I would either email remo or post on the ditools forums regarding R9.

Yes, this is the reason I would encourage developers of less expensive plugins to forego registration locks. It's a huge hassle getting all these plugs to work for each successive version.

Anyone hear anything from the Xfrog people? I sent them an email but have not heard anything back from them?
This shave update, what does it fix? Is it just so you can install shave with clean R9 install or is there some other stuff it addresses?

If I ordered the XL bundle (everything, right?) will it come with entirely new CDs?
I didn't specify that I needed new numbers to Rafi because I assumed upgrading the bundle would get me the proper installers and new serial numbers for the whole shebang.

yes it comes with a nwe cd with all the mods for the xl bundle. If you have any extra mods that are not part of the xl bundle then you will need to update those with a new cd.

This is only an issue if you own modules other than those included in the bundle you purchased. So if you upgraded to Studio bundle, you've got no worries. If you upgraded to XL R9, Advanced Render, Mocca, TP and Pyro installers and serials numbers are all included. Just let us know if you own BP or Dynamics. If you just upgraded the base package, you'll need to tell us about any modules you might own. HTH.

I spoke with a Maxon rep and they do charge $50 for each update CD for BP and Sketch modules. Mind you, I have the license for the latest versions of each but simply was missing the R9 installers. So technically I would be out an additional $100 just to be able to run software I already paid for in the new version. I don't know why these updates can not be released as downloads or something or why they cost so much. All the CDs allow you to do is to instal the module with the new version of C4D.
I really like Maxon's products and C4D. I have been a loyal customer for few years now and they have made great strides in improving their products. However, I am somewhat disappointed with these fees and prices that keep popping up: $50 here, $100 there, and the stuff with modular updates, etc.

I agree, I love c4d and the work maxon does but they really need to get some kind of handle on this upgrade stuff with all the modules. I also agree that the modules that have not been changed should be a downloadable update. I dont understand why they wouldn't make them downloadable. $50 to get each module you already own to work with the new version is nuts. I paid for it because I have work to do and would like to give R9 a good work out before I start any project in R9.
It seems to me that Maxon is really sticking it to the current user base with all the nickel and dime crap when they could have allowed us to download unchanged modules so we can use them with R9. $50 plus shipping is a pretty bad way to treat your user base IMO.

Hi,
are you sure you haven't misunderstood this? It's $50 for all modules not for each module. Also afaik it should be free until november.

Normally, if you order before Nov. 1st, 2004, the updates of the modules you bought separately and that are not upgraded should be for free. (Don't forget to metion you own them when you order!)
There are so many different opinions circulating...my suggestion to Maxon is that they upload a clear and understandable list of rules and regulations so that all these confusing private talks aren't necessary anymore.

I personally find it mind-boggling how much modules like Advanced Render and Pyrocluster cost on their own, when all of XSI foundation with Mental Ray is only 500 bucks these days. I really think Softimage stole the thunder from R9 with that move, and I'm curious as to why new adopters would consider the R9 base module over competing products when the GI renderer is a separate module.

Well when I was talking to Maxon I told them I needed BP and Dynamics, I was told it was $50 each. Rafi, god bless her did work out something for me.
3 cheers for Rafi!

Rafi!
That woman could get sell George Lucas a Star Wars Trilogy DVD box autographed by himself for $5000 and make sure he was happy about writing the check!
My wallet cowers in the corner when she calls. I swear she has some kind of Maxon Mind Control device on her phone.

I think she is fantastic. Anyone have a picture of her I think we should have a Rafi modeling contest.

Ok I just had made a thread regarding this so I am not alone. I let them know about bodypaint and sketch and toon they sent serials for them but no cd. I am wondering about xfrog as well whats up with that. I agree with adam its a pain for both the plug in developer and the user there has got to be a easier solution.

Registrating either the modules or plugins is a pain but seen from the developers side there is the issue of protection of property. The simple answer (since I won't be the one doing it) is all registration should be through Maxon and if a C4D program version supports the add-on then Maxon should supply the registration for the new version or an old version. Say for instance I bought v.9 with Sketch & Toon, but for whatever reason wanted to use S & T with v. 8.5, I should be able through an internet connection (or email through another computer) to be able to do that. There should be no charge. Now say I have Storm Tracer and it is registered with Maxon, when I buy version 9 xl they would automatically send a new reg. number for ST.
Sounds simple to me, but sometimes I think I have a walnut for a brain.

I think that makes alot of sense. Also one other thing when I try to load my schemes they load but I get 3 error messages first not sure why so I basically have to remake them or else that pong sound is going to drive me nuts. Which leads me to my next question can you shut that noise off? I cant stand it ha ha

May I ask how you got Xfrog to send you a new serial? I just reinstalled Xfrog 4.1 and emailed them for a new serial.
They just said "go to C4D->plugins->request permanent key.

They just said "go to C4D->plugins->request permanent key.Yes that is what I did.
I copied my xfrog folders from 8.5 to the R9 plugin folder. What was going on with me was when I put my permanent number in for c4d the popup that was telling me that I had the wrong xfrog number was stopping the good numbers for c4d from taking hold. What I had to do was remove xfrog from the plugin folder then enter my permanent number for c4d then put xfrog back into my plugins folder and the number I got from going to the web site that you get from doing what they said above worked.
Does that make it clear as mud?

Just to reiterate: I have to instal my permanent keys for C4D, then go to the link found in the xfrog folder within the plugins forlder of C4D and request new keys. I wonder if I need to remove Xfrog files then run the permanent C4D keys, then put xfrog files back into the plugin folder then request for new xfrog keys.

Yes this is what you have to do but

This is what I was trying to say above. You have to remove the xfrog folders from the R9 plugins folder because the perm c4d number were not taking hold if you enter them with the xfrog folder in the plugins folder of c4d.

Well unless someone else from the UK has a different story to tell, all I can say is Maxon USA seem to be pretty disorganised!!?
My R9XL arrived with new Bodypaint and S&T CDs (9 CDs in total) and they did this because, quite logically, they have all my details on file and know what I need them to send me! - why would you have to call them to say 'btw - I have Bodypaint etc too!'? - and worse still, pay for more postage and packing! - isn't one of the reasons we have serialised software so that they know who owns the license?
tch! - and after all the price controversy too! :]
On a positive note - R9 is fantastic. ;)

i ordered r9 weeks ago through Rafi, and she knew i had BP and S&T. but nobody ever mentioned that i would need a new cd for both - nor did i get one today in the mail when my R9 showed up. so now i can't use either module with R9. not to mention i was charged $200 more than i should have. i am not a happy camper at the moment.
now i suppose i will need to wait another week :banghead:

Sketchbook,
That happened to me and Rafi gave me a good deal on getting the extra CD's I needed so that I could pay for over night shipping. Got my CD's the next day.

I'll look into getting a visa.
On a positive note - R9 is fantastic. ;)This is true, and it is the bigest part of the problem, because I would just move to XSI.
And quite frankly any cost associated with upgrading something I overpayed for will not keep me as a customer. It is not a deal to be charged less for something that should be supplied free of charge. :deal:

I had the same experience as kromekat here in the UK, I received all my extra modules at no extra cost and before I expected them all of which came with my final serial numbers,
