Hey All,

I've been lurking around here for about a year now and just decided to register. I have been a Softimage XSI user for a while now and just recently have gotten my hands on Max 4.2 because I need it for work. I have this huge problem where Max will reboot my computer out of nowhere. Sometimes I will simply open another application like MSN messenger or internet explorer (with Max also loaded) and with no warning I am rebooted. This also happens after I close down max then start to use another application. My computer specs are:

Athlon 1.4ghz
512DDRam
Geforce2 Pro
running Windows 2000sp2

Thanks for any insight you can provide!

Try disabling antivirus real-time protection.

If doesn't help go to My Computer properties and in Advanced>Startup and Recovery uncheck "Automatically reboot". Then hopefully you may get some meaningful error message rather than reboot.

Thanks dvornik!

Disabling my antivirus thing did the trick. Funny thing because I thought I had tried that. Guess not... oh well, it works now thanks!

Hey, great. I've just seen in mentioned somewhere last week. Is it Norton 2001?

Yup. Norton Antivirus auto protect. Disabled that and no more problems (so far).

Thanks again

Norton AV has been causing a lot of problems lately, make sure that your NAV has been updated to the latest version (for it to via the LiveUpdate).

You should also check the following components and areas of your computer to make sure that there is no problems.
- Latest motherboard Chipset drivers
- Latest motherboard BIOS
- Check your RAM with a ram testing program
- Make sure the hard drive is defragged and problem free
- Make sure that you dont have some sort of weird system config going
- Make sure that you are running the latest updates for your copy of 3DS Max
- Make sure that you have all the latest Windows updates going

Hi all,

I think the reg for certain features in Norton reside in same memory block as with GForce cards. Therefore the unstable condition especially switching between 2d application to 3d aps.

I did a manual tweak on the reg part and it worked fine.

That's interesting. Can you describe it in more details, please?

Oh, I didn't think it's that complicated. I'm sorry. It's just this problem happens quite often, so I was curious. I wish all these things could be compiled into an FAQ somewhere.

P.S. I was wondering what's happened to you, derelict.
