This is the first post for me on CG Talk so i hope someone out there can help.

I have been using 3ds max for a number of years now and over the past year or so have moved into looking at Maya. I use both Maya 5 and 3DS Max 5 but since using Maya I can't seem bring myself to go back to max. The problem is simple, When using maya all your viewport controls are operated through using the alt key together with the mouse. So when you need to move the camera you hold the alt key and use the mouse, brilliant...

However is there a similar method or way of doing this in max? It is really very annoying when you have to keep clicking on the camera control buttons and then move the camera.

I was wondering if this had perhaps also been altered in either max6 or the forthcoming max7.

Cheers

I would recommend you to buy a mouse with 5 buttons and use the extra buttons to control the viewport, it works fine for me. one button for rotate mode, one for zoom, pan is middle mouse button.

If you've got a three button wheel mouse, then you can do all the viewport maniulation with just the middle button, wheel and Alt. Even easier than Maya. The middle button pans, it rotates if you hold alt and the rolling the wheel zooms. It's been like that for years.

I tend to still prefer pressing Ctrl R for arc rotate (the old keyboard shortcut), as I can do that in the middle of a selection process without letting go of Ctrl and having to press Alt.

You could even remap a thumb button as alt, and then you wouldn't even need to hold the alt key for rotations.

If you want to zoom smoothly, just press Z and the left button will zoom in and out, then right click to cancel.

None of this works for actual cameras admittedly (except for middle button to pan), but you can always navigate the viewport with the above controls in the perspective view and match a camera to the viewport when you've got it in the right place (pressing Ctrl C does that by default).

CTRL+ALT+MMB = the same thing as the tool that Z gives you
