View Full Version : New Reader Feature on CGNetworks...
LisaT 09-22-2004, 06:28 AM G'day CGTalkers...
Big thanks to all of you for the top quality CG art trafficking through CGNetworks these days!
CGNetworks is for *you* the community - both for exposure and to see what's being exposed... So expect more 'reader features' to be appearing, based on your work, to spread the inspiration for all of us...
Today Arseny Gutov from Russia describes how to paint a face-based portrait, based on the example portrait of his own wife which he painted. Gutov takes us through the process from concept sketch to the final piece (perfected with a few tips from his wife :)).

Interesting article, i was that there was more information about the technical aspect of painting in a digital environment. The painting of his wife is really nice though. I did my first digital selfportrait this summer and it was really hard.

The technical aspect of painting is very simple, one round camel hair brush in painter 8, and one blender: just add water...

First glance and I thought it was a photo. Yikes.:D..it was a photo, before painting over... I know that there a alot of super-talented artist out there, drawing real art on their tablets, but the most of these "paintings" seems to be retouched photographs... It's just that noone got the balls to say that..
but I don't g*** a f***, sorry.. nice work though!

Where does he mention it was a photograph? I read the article and it seems to me it started as a sketch. Maybe I missed it but I didn't see anything that stated it was a reproduction of a photo.
In response to your other comment, it is probably just because other people are following the posting rule #5.

well, surely he hasn't mentioned that he used a photo.. but I took a short look at this website & gallery, saw his 100% 3d works (..no other paintings), and just thought he can't be such a "straight out da blue" paintig artist with such good drawing skills.. and it's no problem to create
these few showed "sketching steps" reverse from the final, overpainted image...

nice work though! ..but I first believe if you post a captured video of drawing;) sorry, but this hasn't anything to do with you.... it's just that I got this "looks to much real world lighted"-feeling sometimes if I see digital paintings.. maybe it would be better if you stick with real canvas drawing, so I can't doubt your work and you can also earn some extra bugs if you sell your paintings...

Dude.....
He sketched her just to disprove that he painted over a photgraph??? Give me a break...you're probably thinking that because that's something you would do.
Plus, her arm looks a little strange to me. On the whole, great work though.

i love the art work.... but i just have to say for clarity it should not be clasified as 'showing how to draw'....instead it is just merely showing the stages of the painting. The 'instructions' read as if i were to tell you have to make a cake by saying 1. get a bowl 2. mix ingrediants 3. bake 4. eat ..... those are the stages involved but in no way did anyone recieve any guidance on the techniques involved..... again this has nothing to do with the quality of work or the artist , just the clasification of the post.

Hey thanks for the tip, Ill give this brush a try.
Is there something that you can do with water in painter?

Dude, this is a quality digital painting, I seriously doubt that it is a paint over. Why would he bother? Many people have sufficient skills to produce this sort of painting without resorting to cheap tricks. Simply because he used a computer to produce it does not mean that you should doubt his validity as an artist. There are digital paintings of greater detail and photorealism than this that have been done entirely without reference, so accusing him of painting over, saying that you don't really care and then posting twice more on the same topic is a little out of hand.
If he did use a photograph as reference, it was probably so that his wife wouldn't have to lie there for an hour or two.

.
Indeed, in fact there are many traditional oil paintings, painted waaayy before photography even existed that are more detailed and realistic than this, seems a bit harsh to jump to conclusions when it's prefectly feasible he painted it just like he said.
Anyway, apologies for contributing to any thread derailing here, it's a cool image and that's what we should be focussing on surely?
