You're going to be waiting a while. According to Amazon the soonest books about Max 5 will be published is the end of October.

Typically, 3ds max comes with books. These books include 2 reference books and 1 tutorial book.

Also if Max 4's help files are any indication of how Max 5's will be then you may not need any books.

SOURCE - MAX3D (max3d.3dluvr.com)

'R5 not going to include printed manuals.

Printed user manuals can still be ordered at an extra cost. The basic bundle will comprise only a Tutorials book, the reactor Manual and the New Features Guide.

3ds max Product Manager Phillip Miller:
"With max5, the user reference (the hefty 3 volume set) grew too large for the physical box (both in size and weight) at a time when we were finding less and less people using them as their content was/is identical to the on-line help."

I think that crap....That a company that makes expensive software wont supply printed manuals theres nothing worse than having to break away from your 3d work to look at the help files on sreen where as with a book u can at least look at the book with the interface on the screen following the steps one by one.

There that made me feel better.

Max maybe good but i think there attitude towards thier customers is poor ! :thumbsdow

Notice there doesn't seem to be any place on Discreet's site where you can order the manuals?

I think it's more of a matter of they wanted to get the software out in time for Siggraph and didn't have time to print Manuals. It takes weeks to get books printed and they were probably working on the software up to the last minute. "They're too heavy and won't fit in the box". LOL, Make a bigger stronger box and pass the shiiping cost on to your customers. If you're paying 3500 for software, the least they can do is give you hard copies of the user manuals included with the software. They make good bathroom reading.

Since Max 4 came out I didn't touch any of the books I thought the help files were great, it had all the information the manuals had. Plus the fact that you could keep the help window open while you work within max was a big plus. Just my opinion but I thought the help file was easier and quicker to use than the books.

I clearly remember seeing it in the Discreet Online store and also mentioned through my reseller as well. The fee for the documentation was quite nominal to say the least.

As for them not sending the documentation, big woop-de-doo, its all online in a digital format already and if you really want it to so badly buy the books for a small price (its not like Discreet is actually making money on the sales of these books).

As for a "demo" of Max R5, I was not aware that there was any avaiable yet, do you care to tell us where you got this?

i take it from the " demo " that you think im refering to " warez " its a demo 30days just like the one i got of 4 was

i got the demo from a friend of mine at the local collage he is supposed to start teaching it next term they look much like the demo disks for max 4 ( same type of cardboard sleve diffrent print )
he was through with it and knows i wanted to look at it so he passed it along to me

if you wernt implying warez then im sorry but I have for some reason been sent more then one email asking for an ftp for it that I don’t have
stealing someones software is like stealing someones art and i hate for people to think that that’s what I was doing

Hi All,

I have received my upgrade already.:)

By the way for all new max 5 purchased, there will be manuals included 3 main feature manuals (kind of the same as max 4) with a manual on Havoak and a manual on the new feature and the tutorial stuff. thumbs up

If one upgrade from max 4, the manual is included for FREE with the upgrade.

If one upgrade from max 3 and below, there will be a sur-charge of US$30 for the manuals (Hell, its still very cheap compared to the market manuals).

By the way, THE SOFTWARE KICK A**.:)

Cheers.

Little, I apoligize for offending you, I was not aware that any Demo was released and thus you can see my suspicion, nothing quite like making an ass of oneself to make the day go along better :)

one email asking for an ftp for it that I don’t have

Tehe...these are funny....

To my knowledge If you buy Max 5 brand spanking new, you get the manuals and a book on reactor. And If you upgrade you get only an updated features book which is 100 or so pages.

Ill tell you in a couple of days when mine arrives. My dealer (www.max4Free.com) (jus kiddin:p ) said this is was so. Though she couldnt give me a price of the manuals at the time.

I so want the manuals as max's manuals are the best i have ever seen for graphics software. Though Id love a printed Maxscript manual, as It might encourage me to learn it a bit:scream:

Be careful with that 'Demo' you have. I dont think there is any major problem with it but let me warn you this...Max has permently marked your hard drive now and after your 30 days even a reinstall (of wnindows) will not let it work again. Also when/If you buy a legit version you will not have the 30 trial. It will automaticly say "Auth Me or else" and you will have to send away and email (3 days or more) or make a series of phone calls.

Theres nothing worse than the big Blue box arriving only to find you cant use t for 3 days...well at least you'll have the manuals to flick through:thumbsup:

Enjoy
Cam (eagerly awaiting some dickhead to email me asking why the Max4Free link doesnt work)

Chico I am glad to see that I am not the only one here who is impatiently awaiting the arrival of their R5 upgrade. Have you heard any additional information on the Discreet Subscription Program which is replacing the VIP?

HUmm not too sure on that one Fozzie.

We only have one seat of Max here, mainly Lightwave. Tis not really worth looking into a subscription programm ...though I really have no idea as to what they offer. Ive seen a few people complaining on the discreet forums that on the VIP system they are all waiting still for their upgrades, as Discreet is sending out its first shipment to the people who are buying them from dealers.

Heres a comment from Frank Lancaster on the Discreet forums...

---That is correct "VIP" will end this month and be replaced by a subscription program, which will be cheaper ($390 US for a single seat user). I have also been informed by Discreet that some "added benefits" will be announced as well later this month. I'm not sure the name VIP was dropped because it implied one received priority! For max users, VIP members never did receive the benefits that were suggested when we first signed on. Autocad users, on the other hand, probably found many additional reasons to join

Does this help at all.?
Cheers
Cam
