gal·le·on Pronunciation Key (gl-n, glyn)
n.
A large three-masted sailing ship with a square rig and usually two or more decks, used from the 15th to the 17th century especially by Spain as a merchant ship or warship.

I wouldnt have time to do a three masted ship. I only came up with this idea about oh... ten minutes ago.
I am scaling it down to have an operating crew (max) of 4 people. I dont know if I will include them.
Sorry the sketch is so bad, I did it very fast, I dont normally like to work that way, but here goes.

first update/ poly and Nurbs. I wantd to do all nurbs, but polys are still easier, to make things like the wooden boat

Well so far, your idea looks very promising. Keep it up!!

If you need any references for your boat, you can find some - Here - (http://contest.3dluvr.com/archive.php?op=list&cid=23)

You see, that's what is so great about this place. People are always willing to help you out. I was just going out to rent a Pirate movie for some refrences. Something like "Yellowbeard", or Roman Palanski's "Pirates"

Legend tells of a tale of the first "Flying Boat".

It is said that, when this boat first flew out over the vast sea of the Northlands it was seen by only one solitary creature, a Hammerhead shark.
This shark, not knowing what to make of it, began to laugh. He laughed for so long and hard that the day turned into night. He finally laughed himself to death.

"Now I have seen everything," he was quoted as saying,

before being swallowed up by an even LARGER sea creature.

It kind of gives me the feeling I'm walking in one of those Tomb Raider levels.
Keep it up>>

my last post disappeared, oh well here it is again.
This is the rudder control system, the red lines are where the rope is going to be located when I render.

very nice....the wings needs more detailes....but you already knew that didn't you :)

Im not sure what you mean about the details. This is just a screenshot, not a render if that's what you mean. I have a bump applied to the wing surfaces to give a cloth look and I am going to further refine that, but I still have so much to model that I dont want to get sidetracked, but I know I will.

heres more control system parts, its a side view to show the complexity of this insane design. Originally I had designed something that a person would have to stand at and manipulate. But now Ive made it so it can be operated from two places in the back. One at topdeck and the other at midship, where the propeller operator is going to be located.

Here is the seat contraption. Im trying to use anything and everyting that is laying around. Im putting alot of geometry in there. But its actually looking workable to me.

Heres a upper angle shot, I added a trap door in the deck, for under deck access.

And a quick render, with p-shop cheesy clouds in background.

More Progress, slow but steady, I am animating and rigging as I model. There are some unique challenges to me in working out the rudder details. I will explain them when I work them out.:p

Heres the propeller assembly, unsmoothed, quick renders

I did one with the prop in the shot and one showing detail behind

A Propeller detail shot. I am now working on the winged woman on the bow of the ship.

I see a lot of details, maybe you can optimise some peaces, and give more details on other, but is looking very good:beer: :wip:

Thanks Lorenzo
For the modeling part of this challenge, Im putting in as much detail as possible, but I do have everything backed up with less detailed parts when it comes time to animate them. I will be posting some animations soon, I am rigging it as I go along, for fun. Look back soon.

Good job i like your steering device....
keep going!!

nice job, the cloth texture is good but the wood one is bad, the wood looks better w/0 the texture

dmcgrath
08-29-2002, 07:10 AM
yeah I agree on the wood, I dont like using procedural textures so Im currently making my own. The outside hull texture is a little too dark to tell but it was a quickie pshop paint job texture. Of course it doesnt render correctly, since I modeled all the boards myself and the texture doesnt fit quite yet.

Hehehehe cheesy PShop clouds :D

Looking good so far, dmcgrath :) What I would like to see is a lot more detail in some parts of the model though - add loads of rigging and ropes from the masts! You've already made a lot of detail in other areas, which makes this bit look a bit sparse, like it's lacking something.
I also think the sails could do with a little more... errrmmm...form...Yes, form. They seem a bit flat. Try puffing them out a bit

Otherwise, a promising WIP! Keep it up!
Looking forward to seeing some textures...

Form you say??? You got it. As for the ropes and extras, they are coming. I have a bunch of curves drawn out for where they are to be placed, but I havent modeled them yet. I went nutty on the other parts first.

Thanks for the encouragement guys and gals. Back to work on it tomorrow.

Some ropes going in to the scene now. They wrap in front of the sails, and will pull them upward, instead of the traditional downward direction.

a detail of the spool area used to raise and lower the rudder (wing)

I am posting a link to the animation of the rudder movement. It might be hard to see but the spool and the log control rod spin as well. I havent figured out how to make the rope control the whole thing yet, that is going to be a PAIN.

Here you go for the link

Sticking with my hammerhead shark idea, I decided to make some sharks as decoration on the bow of the ship.

looking good. keep adding detail over the length of the ship. throw in some clutter and misc. ropes/pullys etc.

In response to requests for more stuff, heres more stuff. I am basically done with the modeling and setup. The pedals actually drive the propeller, the steering wheel turns the prop, the rudders move, its been fun figuring out some of this stuff. I will post a couple of shots now, some detail at the helm...

I did a render of the Sharks off the bow area. Basically like the wireframe above...
