View Full Version : After Effects or Combustion?
young_927 09-21-2004, 02:49 AM Hey guys~ I have a big question~
I am trying to do a composite which requires a lot of rotoscoping, 3D elements, and Color Correction.
I have used After Effect, and I am pretty comfortable with it, but I have used it primarly for motion graphic, I have done some rotoscoping before too, but now I am reading about Combustion and how better it is for compositing..
is this right? it is worth to make a big change?
I also hear is has a steep learning curve...
I am wondering if After Effects can do color correction and roto as good as combustion...
any opinions of suggestions will be very appreciated~
thanks in advance

I don't know how much you saw about Combustion, as you said you read something about it. But, my suggestion will be that the best way is to try both and see it for yourself. People here will say what they think about each one, but I guess the best way is to see both and compare them by yourself. Check Discreet web site, they have some info about Combustion (screenshots and features) and they have a demo, full functional. You can do everything, and render. The only limitations are a red "X" in your rendered movie and that you can't save your workspace, something like the project in After Effects. Well, this was in the 2.1 version demo. Don't know if these limitations still are in version 3.
Hope helped you in anyway! :)

yeah I know what your saying Pretorian,
I just wanted to get some input before I make a big commitment to a software..
and I know what I will be using it for already....
so far from what I am reading seems like AFter Effect its good for motion graphics, and Combustion is much better for composite..
I know After effects, so I can catch up pretty fast, but if After Effect can't handle color correction and good roto I should change as soon as I can..
thanks~!!

What sort of machine do you have. If you ae on mac I would recommend AVOIDING combustion. roto in after efects is painful. Have a look at commotion, there is a plugin which allows you to bring roto from it to after effects. Colour tools in after effects are very fine. Especially in ver 6.5 with colour finesse.
Combustion is great for roto and runs ok on a high spec PC. Its colour tools are very solid.
